      To livewith_vanilla

I am very impressed by your train of thought as a secondary school student who just graduated from primary school. I am interested to know how you have developed your interest in study, motivation to do well, and the willingness to share.

I find the above attributes are seriously lacking in most of the primary school students.

Care to share with us your story? I feel that I am too involved in my P5 DS & P3 DD's study. I wish they can be a bit more independent like planning their own time-table for revision and notes taking.
I don't know how I developed an interest in studying, I just like to study . Well perhaps its because I love reading, and I started reading books at 2, and was able to read Enid Blyton books on my own by like 5.

Motivation to do well stems from my class competitiveness. My class is REALLY competitive, and I do well because I have great friends who would study with me and help me with my subjects.

I just thought that since society has brought me up so far, I should give back to society. I might not be able to give back to society using monetary measures now, but I am able to give back to society by helping others and sharing my knowledge, tips and other pointers to help my juniors do well.

Oh and to clarify, I did draw up a timetable, but I never seemed to use it. I preferred to study whatever I was in the mood for. I mean, who wants to keep doing Maths problems at home after a day at school doing challenging maths problems !?
      Not me. 🙂

I suggest you slowly let go, if not your kids will suffer in Secondary, where the curriculum is pretty much independent. The kids won't get much spoonfeeding. Perhaps for the first lesson, but after that, no. We are left to our own devices. And it is for our benefit that we listen and not talk. Afterall, the teacher still gets the pay but we don't get the marks.
Thus, train your kids to be independent and disciplined, so that they won't find it too hard to adjust to secondary life.

        Hi livewith_vanilla,

I really should seek your advice on motivation and assessment books...you're the best example.

I do draw up a time-table based on son's time-table in school. Like what you mentioned, after a solid 2 periods of Maths in school, it's crazy :frustrated: to face more questions at home.
My son is very different from you and I don't think I will see him maturing in the next 1-2 years. Much as I want him to be independent, I guess I have to accept most boys mature much later. As for discipline, I guess he is quite ok in this area since he has got used to daily schedule.

          livewith_vanilla,

You have matured and responsible thinking for a new Secondary 1 ! Keep it up and thanks again for dropping into this thread. Reading your posts always make me feel there is still hope....someday ...someday...

I tried to let go 1 hand at P4 as I forsee the issue at Secondary 1 when there will be 9+ subjects to manage. However, it didn't work out very well. Since PSLE is upcoming, I have to step-back in and keep 2 eyes. I just pray that by end P6 and going into sec 1, the boy will mature and be more independent.

Janet : Good English assessment books are hard to find ! Vocab -> the RedSpot not enough ?

I am still fretting over the Chinese ! SOS !
          Plus...

Reading the threads here......I have to study Science myself ! :?:

I won't be able to help much on the languages though.
My class boys typically mature closer to PSLE and after PSLE.
They seriously won't study at all ! But when PSLE looms nearer, the class is busy with worksheets, though we are still able to find time to chill out.

Let me just say that, even if the day doesn't have maths, the teacher might just do maths. I know that my form teacher(who teaches everything except sci, PE, MT and music) doesn't follow the timetable at all .

She can do maths for one whole random day, and english the next.

And it gets crazy if one does too much.So check with your DS what he did in school and adjust accordingly. ^^

            There is definitely hope.
Boys mature a little later than us girls. So give your DS time. It took my prelim results to make me buck up.
P6 life can be boring but can also be full of twists and turns. Its like a roller coaster ride, who knows, your DS might kaiqiao in p6 ?

Discipline him for these few months leading up to PSLE, and then after PSLE, let go slowly. If you kiasu, can start on sec 1 books. Don't force the assessment books. Light reading of guide books can help. ^^
I wish you all the best.

I was supposed to let go and let son plan his CA1 since there is no ORAL/compo...but dare not bcos he has done badly for CA1 since P3. This year P5, worse...very very scared.

To get a feel of P5, I downloaded and printed out CA1 Eng and Math...really wake up man ! That's why I need to find an assessment book which can be done weekly. Didn't start RedSpot yet...rather difficult and thought of keeping for P6.

Understand Energy & Interaction will be taught at P6. This year, PSLE is brought forward. So teachers will really be speeding to finish up Chinese 6B text according to tutor.

The format for test paper in P5 and P6 are the same. You're right the P6 teacher will be speeding to finish the work and my nephew's P6B maths workbook was totally not touch and pass it to my dd.

                  About teacher speeding,

I think all my workbooks were completed and marked like one and a half month or so before PSLE.

The remaining days were spent revising, making notes and doing practice papers.

I didn’t feel it was speeding, my teachers planned it properly enough. I remember completing 6A Maths workbook fairly quickly.

                    Hi livewith_vanilla,

Do you have to do several past year exam papers of other schools in P6 ?
Is it true that kids have to spend whole day in school in P5/6...like as in leaving in the morning at 645am and come home at 645pm everyday ?

                    Hi Brenda,
Son's tutor pre-warned me about the speeding in P6. I don't want to think so far...just survive this year first. :nailbite:

No lah. Where got so kuazhang. No kid will want to spend 12hours stuck in schl studying ! 🙂 The most i stayed back was until 4pm, after supplementary classes. But no, no one stays until 645 at night. Thats like being in both morning and afternoon session.

                        Hi vanilla

DD is clearing the 2010 past year exam papers and will stop once the school's work ramp up.

BTW, the past year paper that school let your did was 2009 or 2010 prelim paper?
