My friend was worried that his DS was not taking HMT. He called the admin and they inform them only students in 1A and 1Q did not take HMT.
based on the available name list, all 1Q students take HMTverykiasu2010:
This is not necessarily true. I have a friend who is in 1Q and takes HCL and scored 265
My DS is already Year 3 and every year RI change the system. Last year, a group of students from a class who was in a science program called Gallileo Program according to my DS. There are also another group specialize in Maths. This year might be completely different.
the admin in general was not sure which are the classes with GEP students....that was what they told me when I inquired at their office personally ......LOL...unless your friend spoke to the person in charge of admission and class list
based on the name list, it is evidently everyone in 1Q (and for that matter, all other classes except 1A) are doing HMT with very very few exceptions doing NTIL or totally exempted from MT (eg one boy in class 1I, probably a returnee because he has SG birth cert number)
for every entry with CL as mother tongue, it is a 1A boy and not found in other classes -
blessedami:
Not true- I know someone who has take NTIL ( Non- Tamil Indian Language ) and he is in 1Q. NTIL does not have HMT. However, he is in the MEP Programme.

There is also a mix of GEP and non- GEP in 1Q.
My DS is in 1H and in their class the scores range from 266- 268.
1D is also a Sports DSA class. His former Primary school classmate is in 1D, but I think in that class the scores of the DSA students are on the higher side.
I am sure there is some underlying theory on the basis of which the kids have been assigned classes and what we, as parents seem to be speculating is not necessarily true.
Agreed. I am sorry to give input base on information from my friend. It is not important that your DS are in which class. I was worried about my DS class allocation 2 years ago but after one year, you find out that the PSLE scores does not matter anymore. My DS class has students that are below 250 achieving GPA scores of 3.6 to 3.9. They are all above average now.
RI is improving the system every year. There are a few changes again this year. Class allocation should not be a concerns to the parents.
For the new parents who DS is in RI, welcome to the Rafflesian Family. Enjoy the Investiture today. -

B to H will have same or similar average tscore of the kids in those classes, like wise for I to Q
parents should note that class allocation should not be a concern
just ensure the kids put in consistent effort and enjoy the learning journey -
Seeing some wise postings from kiasuson and verykiasu2010. Good work!
It doesn’t mean that top classes have the best teachers whether in RI or any other schools. Just leave those good memories and experiences behind your kids’ primary schools. You are thankful for that but must remember is over and your kids are starting on the same point as others. Do not be overly concern of the class postings. Its never significant at all!
Once your kids are in yr 3, it all depends on their inclination and passion. After all, the most important exam they will be taking is still the A-level.
At A-level, which jc a kid is from and whether gep or not has no correlation to his scholarship or uni application.
Interviewing boards depend on the competitive merits of each candiate. Nothing to do with gep, IP or non-IP. -
thankyou kiasuson, verykiasu 2010 and Innovate- maybe as parents we do overreact as we want the best for our children. But like all of you mentioned, PSLE is history, an access point through which our children are in one of the best schools in the world.
I certainly was impressed more by the seniors ( Sec 4s especially ) than by the grandeur of the surroundings. And I thought in my mind, yes this is how I would like my DS to be- respectful, humble, polite and pleasant. My DS too was very impressed with his PSLs and like what the Principal said in her speech on Registration Day they do take in “our boys and give us back wonderful young men” whom we should definitely be proud of.
We consider ourselves blessed to have had this opportunity and we have told DS to enjoy himself giving equal emphasis to studies, CCAs, ECAs, friendships. -
...giving equal emphasis to studies, CCAs, ECAs, friendships. well said.
i am sure the road ahead will be a fruitful and rewarding journey. it is during the farewell assembly, when the school flash back pictures taken during the cohort milestone (esp the orientiation pictures) that the boys themselves realise how much they have grown.
good luck!blessedami:

Yea, the ceremony was too good.

My advice might be outdated since I had taken the test 3 years ago...
You should try to master your entire o level textbook before attempting the test. The questions tested are easily o level standard and more. If you have time, move on to the simpler A level topics. For bio, it would be helpful if you could read up on the physiology and genetic chapters in the RA textbook Biology by Neil.A.Campbell . For chem, get Advanced Cheistry by Oxford publishing, and master the 1st 10 physical chem topics. (these books can be borrowed from HML). If your ds is in the science club, do read up on your ESP notes, which are very very helpful. Its not easy to master these material, so be sure to clarify your queries through the internet or by asking your science teacher for help (the latter option may even earn you some brownie points :D).
For the test itself, you will need strong understanding of basic concepts and general good analytical skills (interpretation of graphs, tables etc.). Rote learning will not help.
Don't be demoralized by the test, it is very challenging, especially for Biology which can throw up many obscure terms. As long as your ds has a genuine passion for the subjects, and have been dutifully pursuing his interest, the test, interview and teacher recommendation should pose no problem.
Gotta go! I'm mugging for my J1 RA selection test now... -

Honestly, I don't think it is possible to \"win them over\", selection is based on the class' perception of the student. Typically, the Sec 1 class will often vote for the person that has taken the most initiative especially during the orientation camp (eg, volunteering to lead cheers, carry out presentations, lead the class in greeting, etc.). Such are natural born skills and instincts. -

Most of the classmate will vote for the friends that there know. Most of them will vote for their own primary school friends.
There are a lot of opportunities in RI to get leadership experience. The most prestiges leadership role is to join the RIPB. The process to get elected as a RI Prefect is very challenging and tedious. Tell your DS not to give up, there are a lot of opportunities in RI to gain leadership experiences. -
