I made a typo error which i had just edited. As long as a student has 2 or more math/science subjects at H2 level, he/she is considered a science student.

Those students offering 2 H2 math/science + 2H2 arts are also regarded as science students.

One of the most common mistakes make by parents/students each year is they base strictly on cop without much consideration on subject combination.

Example, they will put their preferred jc -science as top choice follow by arts as second choice even if their domain is science inclined. In this instance, they just meet the cop for science. They get posted to the jc of their choice in the arts stream and struggle to handle the humanities.

Subject combination is anytime much more important than choice of jc.
How can we tell how good a JC is other than the COP? Where can we find info on the A-level results for eg the past few years and perhaps the average COP of their students to see what kind of value-add that JC has?

I am afraid that not many jcs actually publish their recent years results on their websites. You can only watchout for their annual annoucement, open house and information gathered directly from the schools and students.

Towards the end of sec 4/5, all 0-level candiates are issued with a jae booklet published by MOE to guide parents/students in choosing jc/poly/ite. Any value award is clearly spelt out though no details are provided.

                INNOVATE:

ACJC is famed for its GP results and have been consistently among the top four performers. This jc also has a MOE based humanities programme and is better known for its arts courses.

She may opt for it and place Anderson jc as her 2nd choice. The latter is known for its science programme.
So Anderson is good for Science? My dd wanted to choose Anderson until her co-worker (ex-acjc) told her the teachers are not good(?!). But acjc is not one of our top choices bc of distance. So...acjc not so great for science?

                What do you know?

Yes, i looked at the websites and the booklet. Not very informative to me. What is silver, bronze value-add, and the the top jcs don't even have any value-add awards!

Information has to be gathered directly from the right sources and not base on hearsay, advices or peer pressure. This is the discipline i always uphold just like in financial investment an investor cannot simply rely on advisory services providers or recommendations from financial advisors. One must get the facts right. Same as in education.

ACJC is better knowm for its humanities programme and is not weak in science either. Its just that comparing to AJC, the latter is known for producing consistently good tack record in science courses in particular math and physics. At the top end of tier 2 jc level, that particular instituition cannot be weak in either science or arts, otherwise they should not be at this level.

All top schools have their fair share of not so stellar teachers as well.

What will be your advice to parents when Sec2-End subject choices are offered based result. My DD school has seminar on Feb-mid & looks like what you decide by this year end will have impact all the way to Uni!

Too early in life to decide leh.

When choosing subject combination at end sec2/yr2, parents/students need to consider their aptitude and interest. There’s no need to be sure of one’s career choice at such a relatively young age because situation always changes.

The following subjects provide the versatility and flexibility in pursuing 95% of all uni courses:

                        English
                        MT/HMT
                        E Math
                        A Math
                        Physic
                        Chemistry
                        Combine humanities
                        A pure humanities subject

8-subject combination is recommended for high ability students who aspire to do well in their respective ccas. Triple science is only applicable to top students.

Many HCI/RI science students opt for business courses each year at unis.
