Am not saying that the books you recommend are not good. My original question was whether there are books where the pictures are the focus instead of words. I will look through your list, altho' the 1st few I saw, I noticed on Dangdang.com that there are no inside views.

Actually, have. Click on this \"显示全部图片\" (bottom right hand corner) of this section \"书摘与插图\" which virtually every book has.

ok - thanks. Aiyoh ... see, my Chinese very poor. 😉

Wah, you mean, like this book that I found from Tamarind's list - it has no words then?
http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20646032&ref=search-1-pub[/quote]Hmm... I'm not sure why they only uploaded the picture pages.

Definitely have words. this is an excerpt from the top-most review \"鼠小弟的每一个故事,都是在用简单的线条和简单的文字来表现的。可是,这所有的故事,都在那样自然地发展下去最后给我们一个令人笑出声来的结尾! \"

      which implies it has 文字...

you wait for the page to finish downloading properly, then perhaps do a search (hit Ctrl-F) and enter the words \"显示全部图片\" and see whether that section gets highlighted?

              Hi Tamarind,

chk with you, if i use the 45kuaidu on my kids, do u think it will work if i teach all 3 together (4,6,8yo). Or split into 2 grps? My #2 is a \"mysterious gal\" I just commented she doesnt like reading as much, these 2 days, she has been picking out many books and reading them

My hb just texted me regarding the change in chinese syllabus too. I googled and read. On the stroke part, i m guilty of correcting their strokes too! i tot its the beauty of the language haaa, but on 2nd tots..hmm who cares how they write as long as the final product is right? Now we are talking abt taking exams and not really \"language appreciation\"..to be practical 😉 ....I think my weirdo #2 will b most disappt that strokes are not impt...she has a strange habit which i nvr instill in her.... she must have the strokes right (not as if she knows which comes first?!) she always insist i tell her which strokes comes first, then she will \"study\" the character then try to write.
              Hi porcupine12trade,
We should still show kids the correct sequence and teach them the 7 rules that I posted earlier, but there is no need to spend too much time on it, or make kids write many times until they remember the correct sequence. Unless the child's ambition is to become a Chinese teacher one day, or she really loves Chinese words like your #2, then just let her do whatever she likes. My girl likes to write Chinese characters too, and she writes a lot on her own initiative.

For kids who are already struggling with Chinese, then the priority should be teaching them to read very well, and speak very well first.

Your 8 yo will learn very quickly and probably already knows most words in books 1 and 2. Your 4 yo may need to spend a lot more time on books 1 and 2. So you may have a problem if you teach all of them together.

Hi tamarind, read your blog after getting to know it and love it. Will be putting it into practice for my K1 boy. My P5 boy a bit too late, now he not only hate chinese, he FEAR it....really, the thought of chinese frightens him. I am still trying to figure out how to help him improve his chinese. it's bad bad bad...so don't want to the same to happen on my 2nd one. So need to start now when he is a sponge. Cheers!

                Hi keltong,
It is still possible encourage your P5 boy to like Chinese. Start with easier books and read together with him, help him when there are words that he does not know. This will build up his confidence.
Try 不一样的卡梅拉 first, these books are quite fun to read.

                  Hi Tamarind,

That was actually a very good advice. I have been doing that for English and now I am glad that I see so much improvement in my son's reading.

I bought for him some Chinese Children DVD called \"Happy Wonderland\" and made him watch few times a week. He enjoys it and sometimes would sing along to the song.

Am just wondering, do you know if there are children books that come with cd that will help kids read along?

Am so sorry if I've been asking stupid questions :?: , I am just so worried that I'm willing to find out anything at all that can help my boy in his Chinese....
                  Liz_Ryan,
Your question is not stupid at all.

Children's books with CDs are quite limited in Singapore.

Try to look for these DVDs
                  喜羊羊与灰太狼
                  http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20493551&ref=search-0-mix

You can print out the above and bring to any video shop in Singapore and show the staff. These DVDs have Chinese subtitles so your boy can listen, read Chinese, and enjoy at the same time. There are hundreds of episodes.

You can also try this website :
                  http://www.qbaobei.com/Html/story/jstory/

Just click on any picture to view a flash video of a Chinese story with words and audio. Click the series of numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 to change the page. There are a total of 16 x 20 stories.

Totally can understand your cultural shock! haha.... you're from SAP school? I've always felt that there is so much beauty in 方块字 and that the order of strokes matter (although my hubby totally pooh poohs that) on how the final product looks. It's just a matter of belief I suppose! And personal conviction. haha.

I second this! 方块字is beautiful not by chance. I'm from rather cheena background. Father was Chinese-ed sch teacher, now a calligraphy teacher after retirement. Went to schs that were labelled cheena type. Took CL1 until O level then never touch Chinese academically, only use mandarin in daily life. Eldest child starting P1 next year, realised he can speak mandarin but can't recognise Chinese words. He use his phonics technique to guess hypy when we read Chinese books. Trying all ways to make Chinese learning fun to give him the foundation.

With the new policy, I think I will need to review home learning techniques too....reluctantly. He likes to draw. His 口is a square & his strokes are from right to left bcos he's left handed. Have been trying to correct him but can't. Abit discouraging cos he told me sch teacher didn't teach him 笔画. If the approach is such, mb I just let him be & concentrate on word recognition. He will be happy to type chinese on words as he likes to use the laptop. How??

Will check out 不一样的卡梅拉. It's 10 books in total right? Cannot give up on my P5 boy, just have to keep encouraging him. And I have to start reading chinese books with him. Just have to do some adjustment and take time to do it with him, hopefully, he will start to grow an interest. Thanks!
