I guess an increase of $70 is not a lot to most of us. But it may mean a lot to lower income families. I had an ex-colleague who told me that if she managed to save up $50 in a particular month, that month is a very good month :!: .

So she never extends her maid’s contract for the 2nd term so as to avoid giving any imcrement. She was doing secretary work and her dh was a cab driver, they have 3 kids and a mil to take care of.

So for those of us who can afford to be generous, guess we can count our good fortune that we can bless others.

Huh? But doesn't she know that it is cheaper to give current maid increment than to get new ones without experience and yet give higher salaries... plus all the 9-10 months upfront loan thingy plus the maid agent fee of aroundS$600?

That was many years ago, definitely more than 10 years. Maybe conditions were different then. I'm not sure. She also mentioned something like familarity breeds comtempt so she'll rather do with new maids.

Is there any maid levy or taxes in Hong kong and Taiwan?

I feel that to increase to $450 a month is ok, but how about the current maids huh? gotta increase their salaries or not? After all they are much more experienced then the new ones.

But if the new maid salary is going to be increased to $650 (even for new maids who have only worked in Indon), to be on par with HK’s, then I want to ask the maid agencies how is the cost of living in HK and Taiwan… not to mention that maids are already experienced having worked in Singapore for some time.

It is all supply and demand.

If you feel salary increase is not justified, then don’t employ lor.
$70 increase is quite substantial especially for young couples and those with lower income.

Ya quite true... A lot of people say they become more daring the moment you renew their 2 years contract.

What about Filipino maids? Should they be paid more? Ours is less than a yr and I’ve increased her pay twice to $420. We also pay for her toiletries and gave her bonus.

Based on yesterday's ST...new Indon maids now command $450 as compared to Filipino at $420. That $30 cannot be saved since Filipino maids will also demand for it.
Can't MOM forget about the levy ? If so, then can give the maids that amt to match with Taiwan and HKG for maids.

Was just talking about this with my friend. Both of us have rather decent maids and we have been paying them above $450 for some time now already. My maid is into her 6th year with us and she really made my life a lot easier. Likewise for my friend. I thank my lucky stars that she has decided to stay on after her contract ends this year. Saves me the headache of hunting for a new maid.

For good maids like these 2, we have no qualms paying them more. But for new maids if the salary is going to keep going up, then for me, it will eventually make more sense to just get part time help especially now that the kids are older and can assume some responsibilities around the house.
