This is what I plan to do when we move to our new place late this yr, but still not sure if it will make the living room cramp with study table+bookshelves. I have a design in mind (v similar to Ikea showroom πŸ˜„ ). I support putting computer in the living room πŸ™‚
I'm separating the bookshelves from the study table, because my bookshelves will be for storybooks. These will be in their bedroom because that is where I read to them. I will most probably put up a wall shelf above the study table for books like dictionary, textbooks. This should not decrease the floor space too much.

I also do not like the idea of all kids in 1 room if mix gender, maybe its the way i was brot up, my sis n 1 = 1 room, my bro =1 rm. We had our study tables in our rooms, and yes I wld lie on the bed when i was supposed to study πŸ˜›

I also don't like, but then how? Kick my MIL out of the 3rd bedroom? Nobody else wants to share the room with her. She doesn't let anyone in either, not to clean it even!

I'm alright for different gender to sleep in a room up to Pri 3. Now my 2 older kids (DD1 and DS2) sleeps with their father while I sleep with my baby because she does wake up for night feed. Once she's sleep through, we might try to sleep all together. Next phase will be all the 3 kids in one room. When DD1 is in P3, she and DD3 will be in one room while DS2 will sleep with his grandfather.

So if no extra room, then have to ask the boys to sleep in the living room, is it? ;D

My 16+yo is sharing room with her 14yo & 11+yo brothers.

My situation is different from yours, so I'm able to stick to my comfort level. My FIL is ok to share when the time comes.

Well in your situation, only you will be the best judge. If the kids are ok to share a room and you are ok with it, then so be it.

My hubby and I did play with the idea of hacking down the walls and taking some space from the living room to create an extra room, but that would be our last resort.

Nice FIL you have. But i think quite inconvenient for the grandparent to stay with grandsons too. Different sleeping times and habits. Eg. MIL has insomnia and is quite deaf, so her TV would be on all night and at high volume.

It's ok lah, he sleeps quite a lot these days, so should be ok. Plus our planned study is in the living room, so will not disturb him. For TV, he has earphones, so noise level not an issue. Sometimes he will tune down the volume to super low and read the subtitle.

You guys can sleep with the TV on all night at high volume?

Luckily once we close our room doors, cannot hear. Can hear only when pass by her room. What to do? Stubborn MIL. Tell her, she don't believe. And she lock her room, so we cannot go in. And if we do, after accused of stealing or putting things of \"bad omen\" there, then how? :x

yes I will build bookshelves elsewhere but add hanging cabinet on top of study table for study related books. Are you moving?

I can understand the constrain. We are staying with my parents temp and my mum has LOADS of things. So though we take 2 rooms, the usable space is like only 1 room  . My gals' room really no space for more books/clothes/toys haa basically i m stealing space from living room, my parents room, any space i can find la. we contemplated getting a maid, but did not coz there was no space for her to sleep! My parents welcome the idea of my gal sleeping with them, their room still hv comfortable sleeping place for 1, however they watch TV till wee hrs, so i din agree to let my gal sleep with them.
