There is no english text book, so difficult to know where the passage comes from. am not sure which level your kids are in - P1 or P2. If its P1, no real need to be that stressed. just speaking from my own experience, i confess that i was initially quite stressed the first time when my kid had to prepare for the chinese show and tell. but after a while, from observation of the subsequent show and tell sessions (teacher allowed less than 3 min, for the students to read off the script etc), i gather that the school's intention is really just meant for the kids to gain confidence to speak out loud in class.[/quote]One thing need clarification is that did the school actually prepare or teach the students about how to \"show & tell\", the approach, the techniques etc such as diction, tone, expressions etc. We were not taught this in our times so how do we coach our kids on this aspect? School should have covered this as part of curriculum, with parents supporting, instead of the other way round. It's really difficult for us as we are also busy with so many other aspects of school already and not trained to teach. Sometimes kids learn better in school environment/with friends than with parents. If they have exposure to show & tell training in school, it'll be easier for us to guide them at home.

DS is with the centre for few weeks now. He has no complaints to date; teachers are quite friendly & for DS who has no homewrk fr sch, the centre's teachers gave him assessment books to work on & teach them spelling (based on ncps's spelling list). They only hv outdoor playtime on fri. Food is ok, DS din complain either n finished his food. They showered there and walk to sch together aft 12 noon. I mz say he became more independent, he can put on uniform n shoes w little difficulty by now.

How’s everyone coping with teaching your children han yu pin yin? Yesterday taught DD till almost want to vomit blood. She kept mixing the u & w and i & y… I wonder how’s her spelling today.

I find it quite good. They go thru the kids’ spelling together and they ar very discipline with reagrds to manners and how they wear the NCPS uniform. I am very happy with the centre.

Talking about the Chinese show & tell, 3 minutes is indeed very long. I came up with 1 script describing 5 people in the family and i realise i am done in 2 minutes. Think need to drag the time by bringing in some tools!

Personally for me, I don't really expect the teachers to be experts in this field. S&D strictly speaking is an academic discipline in itself. I think the school's hands are also bound in that it is the direction from MOE and they have to work towards that direction. But with it being the new emphasis in recent times, I think everyone is also trying to cope.

So just on my own expectation for the school - it is for them to give a setting for the child to have the confidence to speak aloud in class (i.e to a group) and probably pronunciation of words. Other than that, I would look elsewhere for the coaching in this area.

Thanks for both of your reply, at least i have a better idea of the student care. Will consider to put my girl in there, coz currently she is taken care by my new maid, find my girl not very discipline at home and always play with the maid. By the way, you send your child to the centre at 7am or later. Heard from the teacher there that the kids have to shower there at 8 am, which i find it too early. You also give your child shower there so early? Thank you!

I jz chk w my son; they usually shower before having bfast. Here's the timetable:
7 - 8.30 circle time
8.30 - 9 bfast
9 - 9.30 spelling
9.30 - 11 mon (English tuition), tue (Chinese tuition), wed (spelling revision), thur (math tuition), fri (outdoor)
11 - 12 lunch
12 onwards prepare for sch

Btw,DS mentioned tt there's a dental checkup these 2 days.
