it's not that the kids can't use algebra, but more that the teachers need to know that they can understand the concepts well.. models are 1 of the key concepts I believe..

Yes, when it comes to Math, it all boils down to understanding the foundational concepts. Take for eg, you don't simply add and subtract, you have to know why sometimes, you need to carry forward and sometimes you need to \"borrow\". I taught my dd all the way down to understanding all these. I don't want her to do for the sake of doing. One can add and subtract mechanically, but without understanding what all these steps mean.

When it comes to fractions, I will explain in-depth what it the denominator or numerator represents, why the proportion remains the same although the fraction was reduced to the simplest form.

When drawing models, I will ensure she fully understands what she is drawing and representing. I like models because it not only trains the kids to draw out their thoughts but also to incorporate logic into them. Everything must be clearly depicted. If one can use algebra to solve a similar problem, it's because the brain is trained to work in logical steps, but not in a relational way. Either way, as long as the child gets the answer, the marks are his/her to keep during PSLE.

after have built the foundational concepts, ofcos, the algebra can be used freely...model way is quite basic. i remebered when i was in p3, has tried to bid farewell to this way already...but model is only way to settle problems until p6 here.

Wow your DDs have a class blog? How nice. Wonder why my DD's class doesn't have any. :?

Any chance for me to take a look at the blog? ๐Ÿ‘…

It's created by Madam Jenny See. They use it to post comments on research topics and class projects assigned by her. I think it's meant for Responsibility 9's private use. :imsorry:

Yeah, mdm See created one blog for Faith3 last year too. she challenged her pupils to ask any questions and share knowledge in the blog.

I try to 'escape' from my kids at night...by taking a longer than usual time to hang the wet laundry on bamboo. Need a break from them bcos the noise can be rather stressful after school all the way till nights...yes, weekends are no better.

Ha ha, same here, I escape into my world of Jodi Picoult!

One of my favourite authors. My respite is when all 3 are having their dinner. I usually will wait for my dh to have dinner with him. I will go into my room and just soak myself into the world of books or anything that helps me to unwind. If anyone of them enters the room, I'll give them the mummy-has-shut-down-look and she'll leave instinctively. ๐Ÿ˜‰[/quote]yup she is my fav author. I hvnt bn able to find an author I luv so much. I go into depression mode wen I finish readg her book n has no new title fr her. Any recommendation of other authors dat can match up to her?

Yup, it's the same one. The URL is still named after Faith3 but the content and questions are directed at Responsibility 9 this year.

I was quite impressed with what was done by Mdm See, the blog, the prompt responses, the attentiveness on the students... We were blessed to have her as FT last year.
