true. I've teached her how to look a word in the dic. but now she comes with one word and end up with 100s and I have to search for them in the dictionary :frustrated: . I have Oxford's advanced learner's dictionary. Its prints are very tiny.
Hi plum-cake,janet_lee88:
which english dictionary are you using with your lower primary kids? Any reccomendation.for my girl I am her live dictionary. always asking me for the meaning of new words....
I'm also her walking dictionary..as it is a bit difficult for her to understand what is explained in ther dictionary.
Wow...your DD is impressive for a P2. It's great that she's so inquisitive and is willing to find out the meanings of words that she doesn't know. If she keeps up the good work, her vocab bank will be superb.
I only got DD1 her 1st dictionary when she was in P3. It's the Cambridge Learner's Dictionary. Words are not too small and in the middle of the dictionary, there are a few coloured pages which covers phrasal verbs, basic vocab for body parts, type of sports, fruits & vegies, clothes, kitchen and bathroom etc. -

My dd is not a good reader. so I bought many different types of books for her to read. she had no problem in reading them, but if you interupt and ask her questions she won't give you the perfect ans. because of the new words. she actually skips them why too lazy to look in the dictionay. always asks me. some times its makes me :x . i am trying my level best to teach her to read with the dic. And for thoes new words you must try to use them in the real life as well other wise It will stay in your mind for a while. -

I am trying to get my daughter to read more...as for checking up words, she is not that hardworking. She came back with a story book from school last week...it's part of the Reading Program in school.
thank you TinkerbelleTinkerbelle:

Yes am also teaching and encouraging my girl to use the dictionary for words she doesn’t know but she also cannot really understand the meanings given so I still have to explain to her…
Her english class @TLL does the english vocab thingy in the english journal every week which is a fantastic idea… she seems to remember those words from TLL better. -

Guess for lower pri, the kids tend to be reliant on their \"walking dictionaries\". More convenient..keke. DD2 also likes to ask me difficult words. She finds it hard to look up the dictionary. Dunno about your sch but DD's sch does teach dictionary skills later in P3.thank you Tinkerbelle

Every week, I'll get DD to write down 5 difficult words and the meanings in her own pretty notebook, which is like her own mini dictionary. I'll go thru the words and recap on the words with her on/off. I find that she remembers them better than if I just told her the meaning one off. Of course, I need to help her find the words in the dictionary.

DD is in P2 now. And I realise this, I cannot be in the same room as her when she is doing her work. When I am around, it will be mummy, how to spell this or that and what is the meaning of this or that. But when I am not present, she can spell most of the words and will pull out her dictionary to find the meanings of some of the tougher words.
DD used to have a word bank book when she was in K2 which she inputs words that she does not know and will ask me how to pronounce and the meanings. But since starting P1 she finds it a hassle. Maybe because I taught her to use the dictionary since P1 and have been asking her to refer to the dictionary rather then to me.

My son in P5 has the habit of asking me for meanings of words too...I asked him to check the electronic dictionary and write down the meaning of the word...this benefitted him a great deal last year when he was doing Vocab exercises.DD is in P2 now. I never used electronic dic. before. which one you are using? How do you find it? is that provides any pictures?

So far, I use the Chinese and English dictionary features...not very sure about others. Told my son to make full use of it...sometimes if he doesn't know how the character is pronounced, he will write it on the screen and the electronic dict will then tell you what it is.
