I think Hockey_blue is refering to DSA to HCJC. Competition to enter HCJC is pretty keen. No harm giving it a try.

            Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Yes, I'm referring to HCJC which they call it HCI (College).

Does my daughter have a chance like this? I told her the same thing, no harm giving it a try. Given her status (neighbourhood sch student), a teachers' recommendation is a bonus to her, however, she is afraid that the teacher might laughed behind her back saying that she is just an average student and that even the top student of the sch can't even get into HCI and she, an average student want to get in blah blah blah...

I'm not sure if HCI (College) will look down on students from neighbourhood college because I find my daughter achievements rather acceptable compared to the top students in her sch. I think that... the only problem lies in her academic only... she has leadership and sporting talent...

Well, let's just say, I shall encourage her to try her luck... though chances are really slim... 0.00001% ....

            Thanks guys.

If your girl is keen and has the wish to get into HCI (college) then it is worth trying. Afterall she has to take part in the entry test and not you if she is shortlisted.

Hi hockey blue, although I am not sure how's her chance but I feel its worth to try. Help me tell your girl, its the spirit that counts. No need to worry who is laughing at her back or talking at her back. Morever, she is not really that bad. Quality of onself is very important too, not only result. At least she tries and would never regret in future. Just my two cents ... 😄 Jia you !

                    Hi hockey_blue,

During HCI DSA talk, the principal did mention that it will be tough for student to apply for Year 3 & 5. It is mainly for scholarship. Here i think he refer to govt scholarship for overseas student…i think. For Year 5, even the student has 6 pointers, it will be tough. 6 pointers refer to 6 A1s. So, if HCL distination, you may stand adv.
How is your girl in CL?

Like what I told another O level student on STOMP:

                      1) There is really no harm in trying. In fact, you’ll feel even worse if you don’t because you might just kick yourself later for not even trying. There’s always a chance. 🙂
                      2) DSAing to HCJC is competitive. Our cohort size is appx 1000 - 1100. Around 800-900 come in through IP so that leaves around 250 spots. And if I don’t recall wrongly, there were only around 30 - 40 DSA students (they came in earlier alongside the IP batch).
                      3) Academics is very $(#($*&# in Hwa Chong. She must be prepared to study really hard upon admission if that’s not her forte.
                      4) Do consider applying under the Humanities Programme if that’s her interest. If the tutors like you enough, you can get a spot. (Email/ Call Mr Lionel Barnard directly to request an interview, he’s currently recruiting)
                      5) I’d say she stands a decent chance based on her portfolio to try for leadership. HCI (as far as I know) does not discriminate against neighbourhood students, as long as you’re deserving, why not? There are people from neighbourhood schools in HCI.
                      6) Try to get solid recommendations and do a good job preparing for the interview and writing the personal statement. If you flub your interview, NOTHING in the world could possibly save you, unless you own everyone at sports trials.
If she intends to apply for the Human Prog, I’d say read up on current affairs because Mr B will definitely quiz you on that. He will also ask you about how independent you are as a learner because in the HP it’s basically alot of self-study so it’s important that she is willing to put in the extra work outside classes, especially since she isn’t very strong academically.
Yupps, if you need more info on HCI or the Humanities Programme, feel free to ask 🙂

Chinese language? She took her CL in 2008 with A1 for paper and distinction for Oral.

She's currently taking HCL this yr.

micko, thank you. I'll get my husband to call Mr Lionel Barnard 🙂 haha. She's good in humanities. Thanks.
