Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

you did not condemn neighbourhood schools!mummy168:
The whole Pri school registration sy begs review...
1.\tHome-school proximity......Is it logical for children living just next to sch not to secure a place under P2C and for another living at the other end of the island getting in under 2A?
2.\tPV......Seriousy how many PVs are blue collared workers? Do these parents not care for their children education? More likely they are working hard to feed the family, where to find time for PV?
Then wouldn't the playing field for PV ony the professionals?
3.\tPopular schools ................TUR till 2A already so high and 2B filled by kids with professional parents/assoc to clans. Where do this leave the kids with working class parents? Are they just condemn to study in neighbourhood schools? Does popular school then equate to elitist schools? -
Chill, all...
There is no need to get so worked up.mummy168:
mummy168,Yes..the vested interest is far too strong but I'm not gonna fall for it.
The issue with the current pri sch registration sy is real and I am sure that there are others out there who feel the same way.
The crux of the issue is yet to be addressed ....
1.\tIs it ok for the top schools to be almost out of reach to the masses and especially for kids of working class parents? Elitist?
\tIs this ok for our fragile social structure?
2.\tIs it logical for a child living next to the school to be excluded entry while another living much much farther to gain entry at P2A?
3.\tIs it ok for the PV system to be just the playing field for professionals?
4.\tIs it ok for the PV system to be so opaque?
5.\tIs it ok for the registration system to provide for an entrenchment of 'classes'?
There are valid points in all the various posts, yours as well as others. I believe some forumers here are very pro-government, so when you start talking about nation-building, fall of the society, etc., it is possible for some to think that you are trying to stir up something as the GE is coming. I believe you are not, but let's not second guess others.
Just my opinion, our fragile social structure has less to do with P1 registration, but more to do with other issues such as racial harmony, inter-religious tolerance, the uncapped growth of foreigners (in the last few years, but the government is addressing that now), widening income gap, to name but a few.
While I understand your frustration in the current system, I still don't understand how does a registration system based on distance from school helps prevent elitism.
Care to explain?
As for distance from school, right now, there isn't any rule that says you can't rent a house just 1 day before the registration and declare that you live in that house and is therefore entitled to be registered as such in the primary school of your choice. Trust me, I have seen people changing their IC address even on the day of the registration.
That is how any system can be abused by people. -
The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English defines 'condemn' as
'to force into a usu unhappy state or situation'.
And this is the context of my use of the word. -

6. to force into a specific state or activity: His lack of education condemned him to a life of menial Jobs.
7. to declare incurable.
and so you 'condemn' them to neighbourhood schools. -
Cool cool. I know there is much unhappiness over some discussions and words used. Condemn is a strong word.
BTW, I am pro-peace in the forum. But if certain strong words are used, I think it’s not nice. -
3Boys:
Since it does not matter, then why are those with the inside track fighting tooth and nail to maintain status quo? .
The current system could have loopholes but the alternatives provided do not seems more flawed. It just caters to another section3Boys:
Forget 2A, I did not even do PV, went the 2C way for my first kid .\"Oh, neighbourhood schools are plenty good.....for YOUR kids, but keep your grubby hands off my assured Phase 2A spot for MY precious!\"
.3Boys:
Believe me, parents of kids in popular schools have to really put in the more effort than in neighbourhood schools. To keep up with the jones syndrome...But the teachers in such an environment are more stretched to cater for a bigger spectrum of abilities and the parents probably have to work a bit harder if they have a high ability child, to stretch that child.
3Boys:
Then why does one get the feel that a huge deal is being made out of the whole issue when in fact it is not a huge deal.Of course it matters, not a whole lot, but it does to some degree.
Not a huge deal, but its there nonetheless.
Are they just condemn to study in neighbourhood schools? - well that sounds pretty melodramatic to me -

The discussions have been very interesting. There is no right or wrong opinion or policies. Some policies just serve some better than the other. We are all entitled to our own opinion.

I am not advocating a registration system based on distance from school. I am asking maybe there a limit set for P2A such that more spaces are open to the general public.
Current sy, there is no limit and effectively P2A can fill up to 100%. School is out of each for the general public (elitist)
As per discussed in the forum, some schools go without PV, reserving P2B for religious connection. I will think to promote inter-religion tolerance, wouldn’t a better way be to open up the vacanies to those of a different religion groups instead? These kids could then learn to better appreciate the values of the other religion having been exposed to it from a young age? -

:? Why do you like to use the word 'elitist'?I am not advocating a registration system based on distance from school. I am asking maybe there a limit set for P2A such that more spaces are open to the general public.
