Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

Actually, when I read the statement in bold, my interpretation of that particular word used was \"resigned.\"mummy168:
The whole Pri school registration sy begs review...
1.\tHome-school proximity......Is it logical for children living just next to sch not to secure a place under P2C and for another living at the other end of the island getting in under 2A?
2.\tPV......Seriousy how many PVs are blue collared workers? Do these parents not care for their children education? More likely they are working hard to feed the family, where to find time for PV?
Then wouldn't the playing field for PV ony the professionals?
3.\tPopular schools ................TUR till 2A already so high and 2B filled by kids with professional parents/assoc to clans. Where do this leave the kids with working class parents? Are they just condemn to study in neighbourhood schools? Does popular school then equate to elitist schools?
Depending on the context of the content, interpretation can be subjective lah ....
My 2 cents
If I may share, when I read it, it gives me the feeling that the difference between \"popular\" and neighbourhood schools are a world apart........... -
Exactly…words are open to interpretation. Let’s don’t dwell too much into it but focus our discussion on the issue at hand.
-
No need to bother so much whether it is gep, elite, sap, popular or neighbourhood schools. At the end, vast majority of high ability ones will end up in local unis.
Unless parents have the means or kids able to win scholarships, otherwise all capable ones shall eventually study together at the unis. -
Exactly.....
The issue at hand is a suggestion to cap the intake of Phase 1 and 2A. By doing so, it will make available more places from the school for Phase 2B and 2C, whereby most, if not all, students in these phases were non related to the school earlier. They are the \"general public\", so to say.
Reading from the posts, I cannot help but feel that the suggestion derives from an overwhelming preference to get into popular schools compared to neighbourhood schools.
That sounds like the fundamental issue. But, fact is, is there really such a big overwhelming difference between these schools?
Just for discussion sake.

Capping it intake of Phase 1 will invite howls. Isn't the govt trying to promote multiple births? If parents have to keep going back to the ballot box, it's a bit trying (trying very very hard to be careful with words now)

From the master of innuendo, how rich....!
mean what you say, and say what you mean
I quote;
\"it is fashionable among certain people group in singapore to use such term
don't read too much into it
if you read certain forum, you will notice that they have a certain definition of people group whom they call 'the elite'\"
Masterfully clear prose.......
Nothing personal, by the way, just thought I'd highlight the gap between words and deeds. -

My motivations are my own. You can ask why until the cows come home, does not detract from the issues at hand.
oh ya, speaking about 'abomination'.......... don't quote me out of context
if he absolutely abhorred or detest the PV system, why do it ? and benefited from it ?
Actually if you could come up with 2 or 3 crisp defences of PV that can stand to scrutiny, the whole thing would just melt away...... -

And the logistic nightmare if get into diff schools. Limiting phase 1, is well a real pain for parents with more than one kid -
I’m very slow here, but what I gather is that there are some who aren’t happy at the lack of transparency on the PV process - ie how parents are selected. One query: during job interviews, also the same thing. It’s the perogative of the ‘ones who decide’ who to get the job. How come I don’t see people calling for transparency in the process - ie explanation on why A got the job and B didn’t? So why must schools account to parents why they weren’t selected to be PVs?
I personally feel that having PVs around will lessen burden on schools and allow them to tap on ‘free labour’. If not a PV to be the lollipop man and make sure cars and pedestrians are kept safe, then who? The stressed security guards? the Teachers? or worse, a prefect (aka student)? Yes, a professional probably makes a lot more for the time ‘wasted’ - but then, if a professional can get away with paying for ‘specialised’ labour, then won’t there be a greater divide. I’m glad and happy that PV work can only be undertaken by parents (No grandparents, no maids allowed).
I did PV and so am probably classed under one with ‘vested interests’. But I’m glad I did PV. Not all schools have open days. I’m not the socially active type that can go around the neighbourhood obtaining information about the school I’m interested in. PV work allowed me to get INTO the school and see for myself what the school is like. During the days on duty, I could walk around and look at the noticeboard; chat with the teachers etc. How to do that if I’m not allowed into the school?
My 2 cents (then again, it seems a long post - so my 20cents) -
