apologise for making side-reference to you.
Yah, I came on a bit strong. Cool ok, welcome to the forum. -
Look at countries in Asia. Think S. Korea and Japan.
How many mothers are working mothers?
Now look at Hong Kong.
Is Singapore better off like Korea and Japan,
or better off like Hong Kong?
Taxpayers’ money… well, the government will deploy it in whichever ways that best serve the country’s national interest.
For Western countries, work culture and mindsets are totally different. Hours at work are influenced by availability of childcare/infantcare. In France, many mothers do not work on Wednesdays as school is off in the afternoon on that day, and it is totally accepted by the employers. There is also minimum wage in these countries. What about Singapore? Is it ok to continue squeezing the middle class here by having artificially low wages in the form of cheaper foreign labour for our service/manufacturing industry? You can’t adjust one side of the equation without addressing the other side. -

I quote from the latter; \"The Government has maintained that foreign domestic worker (FDW) levies are in place to manage dependence on maids. Yet the maid population has been increasing over the years and we now have about 196,000 FDWs in Singapore......
Singaporeans may be used to paying maids a salary of $380 a month. If the maids work 12-hour work days with no days off, this works out to just a little over $1 an hour.
We live in one of the wealthiest nations in the world; surely we can do better than this, particularly for a community of workers who are an integral part of many households' everyday life.\"

I've posted before that it is quite ridiculous for the majority of Singaporean couples to predicate their child-bearing on the easy availability of maids. What happens when the maid supply is slowed or ceased? We become extinct??
I agree that for some selected families, extra help is needed, but I can't accept that for the majority of Singaporeans, a maid is a necessity. Actually the majority still don't have maids. --> http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne+News/Singapore/Story/A1Story20100716-227259.html -

On a side note... (*I'm neither FOR nor AGAINST the use of maids in households *) ...
If the government really wants to manage dependency on maids, why impose a levy? The levy is paid to the government, but is seen by employers as a cost to having maids. Would the government not achieve the same principle of managing maid dependency simply by imposing a minimum wage for FDWs? That way, the money goes direct to the maids, maids are happier, willing to work harder, employers less stressed, and everyone live happily ever after.
Or am I missing something about the levy? (Just like I wonder why I'm paying radio and tv license for watching TV programmes that are paid for by advertisements, anyway). It seems pretty obnoxious that the government should be making money off the hardworking maids.
