... I quote from the latter; [i]\"The Government has maintained that foreign domestic worker (FDW) levies are in place to manage dependence on maids. Yet the maid population has been increasing over the years and we now have about 196,000 FDWs in Singapore......
On a side note... (*I'm neither FOR nor AGAINST the use of maids in households *) ...
If the government really wants to manage dependency on maids, why impose a levy? The levy is paid to the government, but is seen by employers as a cost to having maids. Would the government not achieve the same principle of managing maid dependency simply by imposing a minimum wage for FDWs? That way, the money goes direct to the maids, maids are happier, willing to work harder, employers less stressed, and everyone live happily ever after.
Or am I missing something about the levy? (Just like I wonder why I'm paying radio and tv license for watching TV programmes that are paid for by advertisements, anyway). It seems pretty obnoxious that the government should be making money off the hardworking maids. -

The government is making money off the employers.
The levy adds to the cost of employing maids, but that does not mean that every maid deserves an increase in salary if the levy is removed. This is because many maids are basically good for nothing, cannot cook, cannot clean, cannot look after kids. SGD300 is a very high salary for these maids, they earn less than half of that in their own country. -

Hopefully this Firday we heard some good news.

Budget speech lor. DPM Teo already set the expectation by stating that we should not expect too much recently in the papers.

Actually, I think this is a good idea. If the maids are paid higher here, more maids would want to come to work here (as opposed to HK or Taiwan), then surely, with more competition, the quality gets better, right? If the government really wants to manage dependency on maids, why impose a levy? As someone said earlier, when the maid is good, existing/potential employers are keen to pay more anyway. -

There are too many men in the government, they do not understand why maids are a necessity to many families. Just like some insensitive men in this thread. Most men cannot understand the difficulties that mommies are going through.

er... more mothers would leave the workforce to become SAHMs?I've posted before that it is quite ridiculous for the majority of Singaporean couples to predicate their child-bearing on the easy availability of maids. What happens when the maid supply is slowed or ceased? We become extinct??
Is this acceptable for our government or good for our country?
Then instead of having more FDWs, we will have more foreign workers (including expats to replace the local mothers). -
