Hi mummies and daddys
Appreciate some advice on SAP schools.
I understand SAP schools are teaching all students \"Higher\" Chinese from P1. On the other hand, non SAP schools students have the option to choose \"Higher\" or \"Normal\" Chinese? :? (Do the students or the teachers decide if this is the case? )
What is the different when it comes to PSLE? Is there any differentiation for students taking \"Higher\" Chinese at PSLE as oppose to \"Normal\" Chinese?
Thank you.

Hi dorisp,
Higher Chinese (HCL) is compulsory from P1 for ALL SAP schools.
However, at P5 the student can drop HCL for normal Chinese if grades do not qualify them to continue with HCL. However, some parents do insist their kids continue with HCL at P5 even when their kids’ P4 HCL results are not very good.
Students will have to take HCL paper as well as CL paper at P5/6.
Supposing students do very well at P6 for HCL, they can get between 1-3 marks extra and attend Secondary schools which offer HCL.
Parents, do correct me if I made any mistake. Thanks. -
Thanks janet.
What about non SAP schools? For P1 students of non SAP schools, do they take HCL or CL? If there is a HCL or CL choice for non SAP schools, who decides? the student, parent or teachers? :? -
I do not know about whether non SAP offer HCL.
SAP schools are more than just HCL. They offer a more Chinese Culture environment and teaches some non-academic subjects in Chinese. -

For P1 students of non SAP schools, they take normal Chinese. If their results are good, then school will offer HCL from P2 onwards...again, I would need parents to correct me if wrong. Thanks janet.

For non-SAP schools, the school will offer HCL for P5-P6. For some schools, students may get to learn HCL. However, as these schools are non-SAP schools, these students will not be tested at the higher Chinese level. They will only be tested at the normal Chinese level. -
Thanks qms, janet...
So only students from SAP schools get to do Higher Chinese automatically from P1...........
And if these (SAP school) students don't do \"Higher\" Chinese well, by P5, they will be \"recommended\" to do just Normal Chinese............and take PSLE at \"Normal\" Chinese level...
For non SAP schools, the starting point is always \"Normal\" Chinese until they prove themselves to be good, then by P5, some of them get to do \"Higher\" Chinese but will still be examied at PSLE on \"Normal\" Chinese........did I get all these right? :?
Thanks in advance for your kind advice.

No. All schools (including non-SAP) offer HCL at P5 and P6 level and students who are good enough can opt to do it. And they will be tested for HCL and will take both CL and HCL at PSLE.Thanks qms, janet...
