For P1 students of non SAP schools, they take normal Chinese. If their results are good, then school will offer HCL from P2 onwards...again, I would need parents to correct me if wrong.

For non-SAP schools, the school will offer HCL for P5-P6. For some schools, students may get to learn HCL. However, as these schools are non-SAP schools, these students will not be tested at the higher Chinese level. They will only be tested at the normal Chinese level.

        Thanks qms, janet...

So only students from SAP schools get to do Higher Chinese automatically from P1...........

And if these (SAP school) students don't do \"Higher\" Chinese well, by P5, they will be \"recommended\" to do just Normal Chinese............and take PSLE at \"Normal\" Chinese level...

For non SAP schools, the starting point is always \"Normal\" Chinese until they prove themselves to be good, then by P5, some of them get to do \"Higher\" Chinese but will still be examied at PSLE on \"Normal\" Chinese........did I get all these right? :?

Thanks in advance for your kind advice. šŸ˜„

No. All schools (including non-SAP) offer HCL at P5 and P6 level and students who are good enough can opt to do it. And they will be tested for HCL and will take both CL and HCL at PSLE.

My son is the 2nd batch of students using the new P5 textbook. It's not easy :frustrated: even though it's normal Chinese. I really hope MOE can simplify it a little.

I'm somewhat relieved he has to drop HCL at the end of P4...can't imagine him having to do both HCL and normal CL.

Hi! Just read your posts re HCL. I hear from my neighbour that some schools use HCL books right at P1. Perhaps that will set the standard for CL in schools? It is true though that at end P4, parents and children get to choose HCL or CL.

yup, at the end of P4, pupils can choose to do HCL and CL if their results qualify them .

sorri, shd be P4 not P5, type error, has ammended.

So it means that children will get \"moved\" from HCL to CL at end P5 if they don't qualify...hmm...quite damaging for child's ego right? That means if my child does HCL, I must work harder to help child stay on HCL. Wow! I must be super mom again.

My son had to take HCL from P1. At the end of P4 last year, he had to drop it for normal CL. He didn't find it damaging for his ego bcos he is too happy to drop it. Honestly, I don't mind either bcos we speak English all the time, so don't think he can continue with HCL all the way to P6.
