Chenonceau:
Hi Chenonceau,I attended an English Compre & Science Parent Workshop at Little Boy's school yesterday... and I thought I should share this.

Thank you for sharing. We have started some training for dd on this compre section since January and hopefully she can do better by September time.
As for Sciecne, hopefully the 6 months workshop provided by school can help.
I am also looking forward to your valuable input on Maths and Chinese after your workshop. -
Brenda10:
Hi Brenda, is your DD in P6 this year? How was the P5 experience?

Hi,janet_lee88:
Hi all,
My son is in Pr 5 this year and he scored only 60 plus for science and maths. He has maths tuition but not for science.
Can anyone please share views as to how i can help him improve his marks. PSLE is not far away and i am horrified!
My son is in P4 this year but his Math is only in the 60s range too. Science wise around that area...maybe touching 70. Will having a Maths tutor help improve my son's results ? Hubby is the one teaching Math & Science presently. Don't know if his teaching style is wrong or son is careless and/or weak.
Hi,
I have 3 kids in P5 this year, they do not have tution for Math & Sci as I am the one to guide them. Their Math is always top few in class and Sci is band1 range.
For Math, get them do more questions, use those assignment books that have working solution. Help to solve a problems using difference methods. For weak student, help to put a question into model.
For Science, I notice that a lot of students fails to answer the question to what the questions wanted. Encourage your child to write as many answer as he know that is related to the question as his answer. Ask him to explian every answers even the question did not ask to explain. They may use internet to look for picture to help them better understand a topic
I hope it does help you.

Sorry for late reply. Will try out your method. Appreciate it. -

Hi Chenonceau,
Yes. DD is in P6 this year.
The following is just our experience for P5:
As you are aware there is a steep jump in the academic standard from P4 to P5 and most of the topics would be covered in the P5, as such is very important for the children to grasp the concept well otherwise they may struggle in P6 when teacher move in a very fast pace.
I find time factor is very important for P5, The children have to work with speed and accuracy otherwise they may not able to complete the test in time.
In P5, dd school did not really give them many homework perhaps certain works like Maths, Compo had done in the school, therefore P5 was considered not that stressful to us in term of work volume.
The above are just my 2 cents thought -

Thanks so much for sharing your DS's sch's Parent Workshop. P5/P6 Eng Compre is indeed challenging as there are always a few inferential questions which requires the child to think out of the box to score well in this section. -

Hi Tinkerbelle, you're most welcome!! Here is my sharing on this week's Parent Workshop.

http://petunialee.blogspot.com/2011/02/feeling-of-dread.html
Thanks, Chenonceau, for your sharing of the Parent Workshop. I'm beginning to feel cold sweat
as DS is already in P6 and little time to \"buck up\" before PSLE :stupid: . Can you please share the template for Chinese Compo? DS is very weak in Chinese as well, esp compo and oral part. Thanks again.

I wanted to do that but didn't because I neither read nor write Chinese... I know it is a template that Little Boy finds useful, but I am not sure how to render it for sharing... So sorry!

So many people have left messages for me to share the template... Let me try my best.
(1) Target to write 80 words for each picture.
(2) Systematically examine each picture from the perspective of 5 senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing).
(3) Examine the picture for every small detail and write about them.
(4) DO NOT make up things not in the pictures. Imagination is not encouraged. Accuracy of picture description is.
(5) Make sure you make a moral judgment about what is happening.
Hope this helps!! -

This is such an interesting approach. Gives so much more ideas/sentences to write about.

Thanks for sharing, I suppose these tips can be applied to EL compo as well. -
