May I know if Simple Machines is in the PSLE Science syllabus? Forces I checked from the MOE syllabus is included but I couldn't find Simple Machines and yet I find some questions from assessment books regarding Simple Machines like pulley system. Thank you.

Simple machines are not within the current syllabus. These assessment books you referred to are probably based on the previous syllabus and are not updated.

My son had this prelim paper and one of the qns was this:

Rong Qi set up an experiment as shown below.
(Ok, no pic, but discription. You see a test tube. The pic is vague, but I will try.

        __Stopper__

        __Seeds___
        _Moist cotton wool_

        ___________
        Limewater

The whole thing is the tube. The stopper is at the mouth of the tube. A little lower is the seeds resting on top of Moist cotton wool. Then limewater fills the bottom.)
He left the test tube near a window in his classroom for one week.He observed that the limewater turned chalky.
        a) Based on the results, what happened to the seeds?
b)Explain your answer in part (a).
        c) His teacher commented that he needs a control setup. Draw the control setup.

My son came to me with this question and I am no good at science. :stupid: So could any kind soul help me? :?:

        Thanks in advance,
        24-hour Father

          Hi

I suggest you ask your son to look at the concept of germination and respiration to answer this question.

I think the purpose of the experiment is to see if carbon dioxide is given off by germinating seeds.

Lime water becomes chalky in the presence of carbon dioxide. It shows that carbon dioxide was given out by the seeds during germination.

For the control, you may use boiled seeds or no seeds in the test tube.

          Best wishes

Need some help on this question:

The table below shows the characteristics of four animals (A, B, C and D).

Animal\tDoes it fly?\tDoes it swim?\tDoes it lay eggs?
            A\tNO\t YES\tYES
            B\tYES\tNO\tNO
            C\tNO\tNO\tNO
            D\tYES\tYES\tYES

Which animal could possibly be a bird?

            (1)\tA\t(2)\tB

            (3)\tC\t(4)\tD\t(\t)

Answer given in Answer Key : A
My query: Couldn’t Option D be also correct? E.g. a petra, ducks that fly

              Hi

I think classification is covered under Diversity of living and non-living things in P3.

If I remember correctly, the penguin is given as one of the examples of flightless bird.

So naturally, many primary students would go for option (1) ------- A
Maybe, this is the expected response in the answer sheet.

But you’re correct to say that option (4) is also an appropriate answer. There are birds which can swim and fly.

              Best wishes

Thank you, Tianzhu. Hope no such question appear in the PSLE. Bless all the dear little brains... they almost have to mind-read the examiner.

                    Hi tisha

                    Good Morning.

                    A and B are offside.

C is true; oxygen is a product of photosynthesis.

D may not be completely true, but in primary science, students learned that plant respire through openings called stomata. It would be better if only had been left out in the option.

Therefore, given the four choices, I‘d go for option (4) ------ C and D only. That’s the closest answer.

                    Best wishes

                      Hi anneshirleygilbert

                      Good Morning.

PSLE is a national exam, in the development of the questions, I am sure that there will be multiple checks by different teams of experienced teachers.

So even though, students may have different learning resources, arrive in different modes of transport to take the exam, but at the end of the day, every student takes the same paper.

                      Don’t worry too much.

                      Best wishes
