      Jennifer:
Ytd my P4 boy brought back a MA worksheet \"Review 1\" to do at home. He wanted me to vet his ans. I asked for the reason since this was the 1st time this year he made such a request. Turned out the MA teacher told the class that anyone who makes silly mistakes wld hv his/her worksheet flash on the visualisor and his/her name made known to the whole class.

Can this be considered public shaming?

I can understand the need to push for the child to be more careful, but is it necessary to make known the child's name too? Somehow not comfortable with this arrangement.

The last EL compo, the EL teacher also flashed on the visualisor a well written compo and a not too good one to highlight to the class her expectations. No names were mentioned.
I also do not agree to such practise.

If it is done for the whole cohort, then I think it is wrong because some pupils just cannot do MA no matter how you teach. But we are talking about M1 class here. So probably the teacher has very high expectation of them all. Even if they make silly mistakes, the mistake must be silly in every sense of the word, in that it is not that they can't do it, it is due to carelessness or something. It will make the kid be more careful in future. but i dont think they will be demoralized as these kids know they can do better. IMHO only.

You are right. Perhaps it's easier to accept that fact for other subjects. Science is a subject that requires a lot of information, but with just 3 periods of Science per week, it's really not sufficient to teach everything. I guess the kids have to acquire their own Science knowledge via reading and applying.

U not old lah, just busy.

One more week to CA1 and we still hv not revised Sci and Maths :!:[/quote]I feel that teachers are teaching and teaching right to almost time for CA1...no different from going to U. I just dug out P3 Science assessment books to revise living/non-living things as well as plants and animals.
Still wondering how the P5 CA1 paper is set. :?

            Periwinkle,

Is your daughter learning 'Reproduction in Humans' now ?
Son is taught family tree & reproduction system now...don't know if that will be tested for CA1. 😢
            Hi Janet,
Yup, she was taught Unit 1, Heredity and reproduction. And also Unit 3, Water matters. But teacher had not taught Unit 2 Reproduction in plants. Is is in line with yr ds's science lessons so far?

              Lizhi,

I am just wondering since CA1 will be tested till 第五课, do they have to do 习字 for 第五课. According to my dd, teacher told them to stop writing at 第四课. Next week, they will be having 听写/默写 on 第五课 so I find it strange that if usually the words were being reinforced by writing in their 习字 before 听写, why didn't they have to do it for 第五课?

Btw, how did your dd find the Science Quiz on Monday? Do you think that they were sufficiently equipped by the teacher (not the parents) to attempt the Quiz? My dd said that some of the questions were not exactly taught by the teacher but she could do them because of the \"work\" she did at home.
For my dd’s “习字”, I almost ignore it. I’m not sure whether the teacher will look over “习字” or not. For her “听写”, my way is I test her every day, try to let her memorize them by repetition. Once the words which she forgot, she would write three times in her own books. When she was in p2, she liked to write a word over ten times in order to get much higher scores from teacher, even she had such highly motivated, but I didn’t think this is a good ways as it would be a more or less mechanical model. But so far, my dd also has the problem, “take pen, forget character” (提笔忘字).
For Science Quiz’s problem, I listened to her mention, she could not sure her answer, so she had to check her tutor. When my dd1 was in primary school, had the same problem, then I recognized we should teach child by ourselves, except to follow the school’s science tingxie list, try to enabling a wide range of reading, enriching her knowledge.
How I expect the teacher to teach in china’s pattern, \"the force feed duck\", no need our parents to involve totally, but it is impossible.

                Hey P5 mothers,

Don't worry, these are exactly the 2 P5-units to be tested in P5 CA1 Sci, plus some P3 & 4 units. My son bought home the timetable and content to be tested yesterday 😄

No wonder my son kept asking us whether his answer is correct or not?

I am not too sure abt this. Take for example the Art & Crafts teacher. His 1st assignment for the pupils were to research on an artist MC E... My boy then printed a few pages on this artist and brought the papers to sch. For this, the teacher awarded him a bar of Oreo biscuits which made my boy very happy. A few lessons later, my boy told me he hates Art & Crafts lesson. Reason: He was reprimanded by this teacher for forgetting to submit his \"Fruits\" assignment. According to my boy, he was scolded for being not taking pride in his work. IMHO, what has forgot to submit got to do with pride in work? If my boy does not take pride in his Art & Crafts work, he wld hv pestered me to complete the assignments for him and also not pestering me to buy the full set of shading pencils.

I do not know if this teacher is a full time teacher (who understands child pyschology) in PH, but every time I asked my boy what's the art assignment, he wld tell me he does not understand what the teacher said exactly

My point: every child is different. For those who are more emotionally sensitive (like mine), the teacher must be very careful in his/her disciplinary measures. I do not wish my boy to come home one day and tell me he hates MA too.

I did mention that the FT keeps a record of pupils who forget to complete and submit their assignments. Now my boy calls up his classmate everyday to check. I find this very stressful for all parties. I also wish he stops doing this but he wants to be 100% sure he has not missed out anything. Hiaz.
