All About Life Without Maids

My dh couldn't wait and went ahead with buying the standing iron. After using for the first time, I agree with b2b3m4. It only works for t shirts where u do not really need to have the crisp look. For business shirts and pants, still need the normal steam iron. Another thing to note is that the steam from the standing iron made the clothings slightly damn & we need to let the clothes 'air' for a while before putting them back in the wardrobe. However I must say it is rather convenient and saves time for me as i do not have to set up & put away the ironing board. As my kids and myself wear a lot of casual wear, the standing iron is still very useful for me
I would not recommend a standing iron, it only helps in freshening up clothings but if you need a sharp ironed look, a standing steam iron will not be able to achieve that. Especially if u use tumble and dryer funsction, clothes tend to be even more wrinkled which i feel a standing iron will not be able to steam the creases out. For fast ironing, i still believe in a steam iron system.ptmom:
Hi all,
Really happy to chance upon this thread. My maid of 3 years is leaving in a few days time and I have decided not to have a new one after many bad experiences the past 14 years of having maids!
Besides being inspired through this thread, I have also learnt many household 'toys' that I hv decided to get - irobot, dryer & thermal pot
However I am still contemplating on the following and would like to hear from any users its effectiveness :
1) standing steam iron - is it easy and good to use?
2) dishwashing machine - any good brand to recommend?
Thanks!

My hubby die die insisted on getting the standing iron, esp after seeing those sales assistants in dept stores ironing. I told him those clothes are brand new and won't have much crease. After 2 months, that stand iron is now in the store room...definitely white elephant :x

Definitely need the conventional ironing board to press and iron out the pleats on daughter's pinafore.[/quote]ha ha ha all husbands seem to be alike - always fascinated with new gadgets. My girls' pinafores also have lots of pleats! Sigh no choice then. I have decided to use the conventional iron once a wk and the standing iron on a daily basis to reduce my ironing basket. -
ha, ha... My DD's uniform too!!! Dun tell we are talking about the same school.
For her uniform, I always hand washed. Then hang the uniform to dry. I'll trty to straighten the uniform as much as possible. When it comes to ironing, mushc easier. Sometimes can even dun need to iron.

one trick on the ironing chore is to do it while the clothes is still damp (esp after spin dry), iron it, and then put it on the hanger to dry
