I'd disagree. It would be a disappointment if having swiped a significant fraction of the cream of students, that they all turned out to be leaders in scientific and technical fields only. Their mission needs to be greater than that.

This just depends on your perspective. To me, genuine leaders in scientific and technological research are much more difficult to produce than politicians in the local context. Thus the need for a real specialised school like NUSH to accomplish this mission.

I am in biomedical sciences, with responsibility for a research group. You can only do so much as a pure scientific/technical leader. And whilst true geniuses are hard to find, and when found, should be groomed, increasingly scientific discovery in any field is a team effort. The scientific leader who is able to cooperate, collaborate, integrate a team, is far more effective in the modern environment than a pure genius who works alone.

Wei Han, I assume you are still schooling. Trust me, technical excellence can only get you so far, not only as an individual, but in furthering human endeavour. If our best technical brains do not develop those additional skills, then it crying crying shame. Those additional skills then also allow these individuals to take up further leadership positions in industry and public sector, and should absolutely do so if they have the desire. These are talent that cannot be lost to society just because they obtained a PhD.[/quote]3boys. Yes. Of course, when I say scientific and technical leader, I don't mean that he/she will be working alone. I really mean that he may be leading group in cutting edge scientific research whenever necessary. getting a Ph.D don't qualify as a technical leader yet. A scientific leader charge new territory with new novel ideas and is able to bring up a group, assemble different skills necessary for his endeavor.

it is noted that the top scorer for 2010 PSLE was not in the above record : because he is in the school via DSA. Hence it is deduced that DSA candidates’ score are not reflected in the above listing

same reason for "none posted" for NUSH, SOTA, SST, SSC

Thanks for the post vk2010. It must have taken you some time to pull up the info from the MOE site.

And yes, MOE doesn’t include the scores of students who got into the schools via DSA. If they did, the mean and median of some of the top schools would be different I suspect.

for example, the school that the year's top boy (282) went to, though the COP is 259 but many with 262 could not get in via appeal (DSA), while those around 270+ got in easily via appeal...so probably the median for that school could be higher than the official 263..but it does not matter once they are in as they all start from the same baseline doing the same curriculum

Performance at PSLE is not an indicator of how well a student will do at secondary school. Hard work and perseverance are important factors too. And time management.
