2012 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

A distant relative told me recently that her daughter’s tution centre said to expect about 10 questions that are nowhere to be found in usual textbook syllabus in PSLE maths each year. I assume what she meant is questions that are structured differently, but still within the general topics covered in textbook (area, ratio, angels, etc.) Anyway, I didn’t clarify further with her as I was rushing for time.
Anyone know anything similar to such comments? I find it bizzare but won’t want to miss out on any info that may help. -

Thank you for sharing.
During the parent teacher meeting, the form teacher told us not to just focus on those challenging questions and neglected those 1 - 2 marks questions as they experience some children end up make quite a numbers of mistakes in those area. -
Every mark is precious in the PSLE. In the middle majority range from 220 to 245, perhaps as many as 500 students could be having the same score, so each mark could mean about 500 positions ahead or behind just by a difference of 1 mark? So every major problem of 4-5 marks makes a big difference.

My teacher trained us to write out an essay fast, so mostly we didn't have to do it at home, but sometimes, we bring it home but complete it within 30 min if we are in a rush.
Actually I prefer to have compo be it CL or EL do during their lesson or supplementary class. BEST is not to bring home as this two are very time consuming when do at home.livewith_vanilla:
Mine was this:
\"Recess try to do your maths. Don't waste time. Then when you go home, do as much as you can\"
The p6 prefects, like me, especially from my class (first class) didn't do duty after three months. It was study study study. My teacher loved to give us compos to do during recess.
She didn't even bother to give us pages. She just said this: Finish Chapter XX . And if anyone finished a particular book, she gets the whole class to finish it. Those were the times my class wanted to literally kill the person who finished the book so quickly.
CL compo usually finished in class because somehow we hand up crap if we bring it home due to lack of time and distractions.
EL compo is done in between lessons, during breaks and recesses, during supp classes and lessons. -

I also hope that dd teacher will get them to write more of EL and CL compo. otherwise is difficult to get a good marks if lack of training. -
Brenda,
A small suggestion: At home, get a kitchen timer from Daiso and train your dd to write within the PSLE given time frame. In the begining, it is a bit stressful to see the timer ticking away but with practice, it should get better. -

Hi pixiedust
Thank you for your suggestion. In fact we are using the handphone timer. However, I'm keen to get one and thank you for recommend the source - Daiso. -

We too were using the hp timer, but recently bought the timer from Diaso. But the ticking noise is quite irritating. So we put it in another room, from where we don't hear the ticking but can still hear the ringing at the end. Plus we put a small timepiece on DS table for his reference.pixiedust:

Inspite of all this compo at home always exceeds the time limit.

This is the same problem we're facing. Therefore I prefer she does it during the school hours and they will quai quai submit within the time frame. We too were using the hp timer, but recently bought the timer from Diaso. Yes, precisely. Using ratio to solve this question is an ideal way. Model mothod is a main method in Primary Maths, but not suitable for all word problems. Ratio is also a good idea to solve difficult word problems with percentage involved.
The model methoid is a pain. just use ratio and basic algebra and there u hv it. I was in P6 last year and i solved that question in 4 minutes munching on popcorn. Most of my friends cud do it too. dun understand the fuss over the question :roll:James Ang:
Who in P6 this year can solve this 2009 PSLE Maths (5 marks) question? (*Page 72, Q16 in the new PSLE Maths 5 year series.)
Jim bought some chocolates and gave half of it to Ken. Ken bought some sweets and gave half of it to Jim. Jim ate 12 sweets and Ken ate 18 chocolates. The ratio of Jim's sweets to chocolates became 1 : 7 and the ratio of Ken's sweets to chocolates became 1:4. How many sweets did Ken buy?. (PSLE 2009, 5 marks)
