I too was thinking on these very lines. The opportunities lost by the most deserved.
These students may lose out in the more enriched programmes offered in popular schools. I think there is a difference in the schools programme, not just students quality. There may be no difference in the older days when teachers simply taught out of text books. But these days, schools offer enrichment programmes such as leadership enrichment, creative writing skills, reserach skills, talking skills and many others which are mostly not offred in neighbourhood schools. MOE may not want to put in extra resources in these schools for these \"extra\" courses since students qualifying for such may not be big enoug to form a class.JonC:
These probably are the smart students who are lazy to travel and just attend neighbourhood school.
Honestly, for the smart students who study on their own and do not depend on teachers, any school does not matter.
Still remember only when Primary and Secondary where attendance for lesson is compulsory (mark attendance by teacher) but JC or Poly or U, skipping lecture is very common especially when one feel that the lecturer is talking no so useful stuff. Exam are mostly self studied.
But there is a difference attending a neighbourhood and popular schools, is the type of students there and the kind of network you have build at school days which will become helpful when comes to working and business.
but maybe they have their reasons for their choice. To each his own.

it is interesting to note that for those sec schools with COP below 200, quite a number of them have some very high score!
Ds observed the same when I shared with him the compiled list. He is observant unlike this mummy, good gracious !
His comments comprehended around high scorers not in top notch schools and went to neighbourhood schools, where opportunites abound are likely to be different. Otherwise why identify out the top notch schools afterall.
On the surface, it looks like \"Aiyah, what a waste, score so good marks, but not in the top range of schools..\"
Well, this mummy can rationalise there are many reasons behind each decision which only the concerned parties are fully aware of.
Agree with another ksp, to each his own . We wont know the actual reason behind each decision made. -

potential academic strength = intelligence (in my opinion)sall:
DVL, when I mention dsa using sports, I also included non-academic talents like dance, music etc. If a student is strong academically, she wouldn't need to use non-academic talents to gain entry to a gd sch. For parents of bright kids who wanted 'insurance' to a gd sch as you mentioned, then they are just very kiasu. If COP of a gd sch is 260 and parents feel that their kids are in the 255+ range, then they should apply thru DSA, using academic , to try to secure a place in that sch. If students are always producing A* in all their subjects, then there is really no need to try dsa. Of cos, some feel less stressed during psle when they got a sch thru dsa.
I think there is an underlying assumption here: that potential academic strength is equivalent to a good psle result.
I am thinking is it possible that a student has academic potential but just isn't good at exams?
Without the right attitude and diligence, they would not be able to get good psle results. -

Can I just clarify, is the 1st column supposed to read Sec 1-09 instead of Sec 1-01? -

By the time your daughter's time comes along, you won't be needing the 2009 figures anymore, so I suggest that you keep on eye on the last 2 years preceeding your girl's PSLE, that should suffice. -

You are most welcome, Brenda10. Yes, it is very useful as the official booklet will only be distributed to the students in October. It's good to know the various COPs prior to getting that official booklet from the MOE.
