      ks2me:
You can download a software called Sogou and it gives the following:

      http://pinyin.sogou.com/help.php

The download should be found here:

      http://learningchineseonline.net/tools/ (download chinese input method)

Once installed, just need to use alt/shift to toggle between the input modes.

      希望这能帮得了你.
      Hi ks2me

Thanks for your tips. I used a silly way to input chinese characters in posts as I didn't know how, and I don't have the chinese software. Found this website http://www.mandarintools.com/worddict.html that translates Chinese to English words. I type in each word in hanyu pinyin and copy and paste the selected word from a list displayed. Very time consuming 😢

Wow sunflower! I must say you are very creative to work around the issues. If you are not typing massive chinese text, this seems pretty smart way of doing it given the lack of resource. 😉

          Perhaps can try Babelfish http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_txt

Its a translation tool, make sure you select English to Simp-Chinese... As with all translation tools, they're not so smart to take care of sentence structure between different languages... So what you may do is to type the string of words in English that you would like to have in Chinese, need not be a proper sentence.

Eg Type in \"I you him her when why how\", you get \"我您他她,当为什么怎么\" ... Just another alternative, in case it works for some. Alternative just get a Mac cos it comes with it's own feature to switch between languages. 😎

            Thank you for your help.

How to type chinese characters with Microsoft Word/Powerpoint?

Do I need additional chinese language softwares to insert chinese characters? Any free online chinese softwares?

Hi, if you look at the taskbar of windows (at bottom of the screen where the "start" button is). At the bottom right hand corner, you can see the words "EN", click on it and you should be able to to see "CH" being offered. Select "CH" to select the chinese language and you should be able to input chinese characters by han yu pin yin.

              Cheers!

Hi tianzhu, I've downloaded the website suggested by ks2me in this thread http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2699 and find that it can also be used in Microsoft Word.

                  hi tianzhu.

You have to do the below instructions first in order allow you to select what Carrotree had mentioned.

                  1) Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options

                  2) Under Regional and Language Options, please click on 'Language' tab

                  3) Under 'Language' tab, click on 'Details' button -> 'Settings'

                  4) You will see 'Installed services', click on 'Add' taht will bring you 'Add Input language'; input language : Chinese (PRC), keyboard layout/IME : Chinese (Simplified)-Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0 or Chinese (Simplified)-US keyboard.

On the iPhone you can actually write the Chinese Characters, my wife loves this feature! And in the new Mac OS coming out in September, Snow Leopard this will also be possible.

Used to be back in the Windows 95 days you needed extra software such as Twinbridge to enter Chinese, but since Windows XP you have not. Very easy to set up, just download the language pack after doing the settings in Windows and your set.
