Yes, I do agree that reading books is the best way. If your child starts reading from a young age..he or she will have a headstart and they can do well especially in comprehension cloze and the vocabulary sections as well. The best thing is they will actually like to write and not do it because we are forcing them to.

But I find the right creative writing class can sharpen your child's writing skills and give them more strategies to tackle this area. So I spent some time really researching to find a good creative writing class so my child can really benefit. JMHO

Hi Jamine, So have you found a good writing class for your kid yet ? Any experience to share. My child in P3 now, totally no clue in structuring the writing. His comprehension (both English and Chineses) as bad. Big headache now. However, he does read a lot like Gernomino Stilton.

      Thanks !

      Hi tcdl,
Personally, I will suggest weaning off Geronimo Stilton's books by end of P2. The storyline is thin and is only suitable for very light reading. Time spent reading such books can be better used for other forms of reading. My child does not like to read fiction books, so I bring him to the library to pick non-fiction books; even so, he cannot finished those that he had borrowed simply because there are too much homework from school everyday. 😞
Every alternate day, I try to get him to read a chinese short story before he sleeps. He only does his EL reading during the 10 minute morning reading session in school.
I have yet to find any suitable EL creative writing class for him, so now I am only helping him in developing story ideas by attempting school composition together; he did his share of writing while I did one piece of writing too to show him an alternative storyline.

Thanks all for your comments. My boy not only weak in English but also Chinese, guess it’s due to he did not read enough story books.

Think enrichment centres like Morries Allan & L Central offer more leisure learning, focus on building confidence & speaking up in the class. Find this is also very important especially for a shy kid like my son but these enrichments did not improve his eng grade, headache.

              Hi

Check out TAS' website (http://www.thealternativestory.com/) to find out details on their classes (under Schedule). Their centres are at AMK (previously Yishun), Bukit Timah & Paya Lebar.

                Hi Joeyz18,

They are very good in teaching writing and English. My kids have joined their science holiday programmes before as well and they also loved it and learnt a lot. TAS stands for The Alternative Story and they specialize in English and perhaps science.

There is a centre at Bukit Timah shopping centre. You can call them to find out more.

Among the 4 centres listed in the title, I would strongly recommend TAS. My children have been there for slightly over a year. They have improved in their studies and also they are much more motivated to read and learn. Should try their english and science programmes. My children took both eng and science there. My eldest is no longer there as he is in secondary 1. I have stopped all tuition for him as he is rather busy now and he seems to be coping fine. But his form teacher was pleasantly surprised at his results at PSLE, which I also attribute to TAS.

                  Hi Chengg
Which branch did your DS attend ?
Base on your sharing, was it last year he took his PSLE ?

Not sure whether to sign mine for this as now is already March, not sure if it's a little late to start now..

Yeah, am thinking of whether to send mine too. Btw, need to know how is their Maths program? As good as English? Anyone seen any improvement within a short period of time? Wonder if they have Mar Workshop for English and Maths PSLE.

                        Hi,

Yes I found one last year. It is The Alternative Story. They are very good
in teaching writing skills and grammar, compre. However your child must also be motivated to learn. They are good in motivating your child but if your child is the kind that simply does not want to put in effort (my niece), then it is also hard to improve.

For storybooks, they lend out storybooks to kids and my kids also started reading more after joining them.
