Fellow Sec 2C mothers, did your sons pass their English Compo?

Ds came back with a failure, and all because he wrote a personal recount for the topic REUNION. Whereas a fellow student who wrote himself as a dog for the same topic passed.

Ds approached Mrs Jeya to check on her comments, among which one of them stated: Do not plagarise. Ds told her it was original, it wasnt plagarism, and her reply was:\" I am not accusing you of plagarism, I am just making a comment. This comment is not why I minused your marks.\" :?

Is it really true that according to the GCE standard, for single topics like Reunion or Party, a student CANNOT write personal recount? Mrs Jeya didnt inform the boys at all about this during teaching.

BTW, Sec 2 parents, do you know there's a streaming talk on the 25th of March? Have your boys gotten the notification? I emailed the school about streaming criteria to do A Math and Double Science. They informed me that in MS, all will do A Math. To do Double Science need 70% for both Math and Science subjects and at least 70% for Overall Results (for a 8-subject Double Science class), or at least 65% for Overall Results (for a 7-subject Double Science class).

        Hi skyjuice,

As my DS is the first in the family to go thru streaming in Sec 3, may I know what is this about? Thank you

DS told me his friends in 2A, whose compo usually not so great, got 18 and 21!! Before the CT, DS said the seniors had warned that Mrs Jeya marked stricltly but this is overboard.

In DS's primary school, compos were marked by 2 teachers and an average mark given as the final mark. Does anyone know is this the case in MS or sec schs for that matter? I wonder should we request for it? If not our boys' overall grade will suffer in this streaming year!

Actually also my first time going through streaming. Basically, this whole year's overall results will determine his subject choices for next yr. I learned that if they have 2 pure sciences, at the very least, they will have more options in choosing their choice faculty in university. The really good students may even do 3 pure sciences! So if your DS plans to be a doctor, for instance, you may want to find out which sciences are the prerequisite for entry in U's Med faculty.

It really seems too early to decide their future, so I guess safer to have more options. Anyway, I also want to find out more so looking forward to the talk.

Just get to know from my sec 1 DS that I won't be invited to the PTM. He says only those who failed 3 subjects will get to see the teacher. Which means if there is only one boy failed 3 subjects, the teacher will be only seeing one boy. So what is the PTM for? The school should at least give sec 1 parents a chance to meet up and understand how are the boys coping with the new environment and subjects etc.

Skyjuice, did your ds pass his compo? My gripe is this thing about GCE standard of marking for English compo, and till now, no one has been able to give me an answer as to whether it is true that for single title topics, personal recounts are not allowed.

                      Hi Blitz,

Nope. DS did not pass. Teacher said he used too many techniques and wrote too long. DS committed the same mistake and wrote a personal recount too. You might want to email HOD EL abt the GCE standard.

                      Just PM you too.
