      grandevou:
Let me break it down for you - the three things any parent needs to provide to their children.

      1. Unconditional love
      2. Respect for them which will develop into mutual respect
      3. Teach them to be kind, honest and loving individuals.

Good grades are nothing. Seriously, if you raise a kid without garnering respect and kindness, to put it crudely, just dump you as they go on living their glamorous lives. As long as you have these three, they'll be with you through the course of your life.
      :goodpost: Well said, grandevou!!!

Thanks for all the positive comments šŸ™‚

Regarding respect. Yep, respect should be earned. What I was trying to get at is that mutual respect is important.

I do agree that there are some teenagers who are rude and selfish, but attitude is not defined by age. Just like how character is not defined by sexuality.
        Well said, grandevou :celebrate:

You listed mutual respect as one of the items to be provided by parents. Why?

Mutual respect comes naturally when both parties earn each other's respect.
This applies to everyone, not just between parents and children.

Think there is truth to what grandevou is saying. Children learn from parents. Parents must first show a child what is respect for the child to be able to reciprocate. It all starts with the parents.

Agree that parents must show a child what is respect.
It is a parent's duty to teach a child.
And the best way to teach is for parents to show respect towards grandparents, ..... right?

However, a child must still earn his or her respect from parents.
Mutual respect cannot take place unilaterally.

But I am of a different school of thoughts.

I feel that respect should be accorded at the beginning. However, respect can be lost if the person is not mindful of their conduct and behaviour.

I don't believe that respect has to be earned from the very start.

Wouldn't it be ridiculous though if a parent expects a child to treat him/her with respect if they don't respect the child?

Why should a child need to gain respect of his parents any more than his parents to him? If anything, it should be the parents acting first.

As with manners, with knowledge and basic cognitive and physical skills, the parents need to pave the way.

                      Haha and yes :offtopic:

                      Let me try:

On the topic of respect, there is this beautiful Gandhi quote I love:
You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.

Just because there are some gay people who are promiscuous, that doesn't mean that they all are. I happen to have met a lovely gay couple with their children when I went to Disneyland few years back in LA. They've been together for over a decade. And it's quite sad that they can't get married, while a straight couple who just hooked up in Vegas can.

somehow, I felt this was your position while reading your first post.
my feelings were correct; we are from different \"worlds\".
I was brought up in a vastly different manner.
The mentioned of \"Gratitude\" in my reply to your post is one big difference between our worlds.

                        cheers!
