I spent my RGPS years at Holland Grove. Now taken over by Henry Park.

I remember those years where we will have 'turf war' with the boys of Henry Park. Henry Park started out as a boy's school before going co-ed. There's a big field between the 2 schools and we will confiscate their soccer ball if it comes over to our side of the field. The demarcation of course is invisible. πŸ˜›

There was a jagar in front of the school, a small house where a Malay family lives, we use to play with a daughter of theirs whenever we are waiting for our school bus. And at the back of the school there was an area where rabbits were kept. There was also an aviary of sorts where a variety of birds are kept.

      So nostalgic. πŸ˜‰

        hi jitoh,

if i still have those black and white photos 40 years ago, dont mind posting here, to share. Unfortunately when we shifted house, we misplaced them. So very sorry, can’t post anything.

i love that big, winding, curving grand staircase. Very grand ! The design of the old british, colonial style white school really beat the design of the current school located at Hillcrest hands down!

Yes, remembrance of that Queen street rgps brought back many sweet loving memories, with nostagia. Traffic jam, rainy days flooding - all these don’t exist, unheard of.

back then, some of my classmates were rich - stay in big houses with a few servants. Some mend the garden, some cook in the kitchen, some clean the house, do laundry, etc.

during lunch time, their maids called ma jeh in those days or those wearing black and white samfu … will pack their lunch boxes neatly, then arrive on chauffeur driven trishaws - just before lunch time on the dot faithfully everyday, to personally deliver lunch for my classmates to eat. When they open up their lunch box - all of us exclaimed with envy, Wow! Such a sumptous, assorted layout of piping, delicious warm / hot food of all sorts, prepared for them to yum, yum! We can only envy our classmates, with hungry stomach growling inside us, watching them eat silently, with saliva dripping in our mouth.

during recess time, we also played catching in that huge, sprawling playground filled with fresh green grass. We played eagle catching small chicken, played police catch thief. We played yeh yeh, skipping rope, shuttlecock filled with colorful feathers called jiateck, etc.

after recess, we queued up in pairs two by two, squat down by the small drain in the front porch - to brush teeth. One hand hold a mug of water, the other small hand hold toothbrush / toothpaste. Hated brushing teeth! Every 6 months, got dentist come down the school check our teeth condition - got any tooth decay? We very scared of dentist poking our teeth one by one in our mouth to check. Very painful, scared of scaling teeth, we hated that awful drilling sound!

after that, the faithful milk lady will ring a bell loudly outside our classrooms, remind us to drink Magnolia brand fresh milk. There is a choice - you can drink strawberry, chocolate or plain vanilla milk.

jtoh, your girl very bright, intelligent!
RGSS not easy to enter. Yet she made it !
you must be very proud of her!

i believe at same time, you are also a very good mother, guiding her properly in her growing up years - with lots of love, sweat, effort, joy, patience, dedication, tears. Good! Keep up the good work!

I love hearing these stories. Thanks for sharing, Funz. So after Queen Street, RGPS moved to Henry Park and then to Hillcrest?

What a wonderful story, greenbean. I can really picture the nostalgia. It reminds me of those black and white documentaries of Singapore in the old days. The ma jehs (olden day maids in black/white samfu) sitting in their trishaws going to schools to deliver packed lunches. Were there still a lot of trishaws in the 70s?

Thanks greenbean. Yes, I am proud of my dd. πŸ™‚

              Hi greenbeen

Many thanks for your support in my suggestion.

I will take the lead to write to the school and I hope more parents will also write in the support this idea.

It will be perfect if this works as i have 2 other DD, one in K1 and the other 2 years now.

thus, may we appeal to all parents with existing, current P1 girls this year + ALL potential future parents who are admitting their daughters from next year 2012 onwards … to write to the school, to help to appeal for this time change ?

Btw will you be writing in as well as you will be register your DD this year?

                dear 3VS,

                YES! Definitely WILL SUPPORT you.
i will write in to the school, by this Wednesday.

so all existing and future parents - pls also help / chip in to write to appeal to the school principal as well - start school 8.30 am for SINGLE session, 2016.

this one hour difference is crucia. Let our daughters of tomorrow sleep more, wake up slightly later, so that our girls have sufficient rest, sleep, wake up next morning fully refreshed, energetic, battery fully re-charged, ready to meet another brand new day challenge in school.

Thank you very much for your warmth, sincerity, kindness, UNITED in STRENGTH type of support, garnered from each parent.

                πŸ™‚

Thanks for the memories. Im as ancient as u. MPH and The N. library was real close wasnt it? I was at Chijmes (old CHIJ) for lunch yesterday and was wondering how Raffles would hv been if they did not demolish it to make way for SMU today. Its a pity that they could preserve CHIJ and SJI but not RGPS and RI.
Yes, I had fond memories of the school too. I love the majestic staircase and used be stationed there as a prefect. You didnt mention the toilet, that was the only place I hated to be alone, always made sure someone was with me or Ill zoom in and out real fast

Oh yes, the toilets kind of depressing, Im sure its haunted,,, err... dont know what happened there during the Japanese occupation. :!:

Ah, Shanghai bookshop, It was popular back then especially with SJI boys.
I never fail to notice the boys in white. I was kind of restricted so I could only pop in to the bookshop when my mum goes to the dispensary at the corner. Thats red house right?
