Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

Hi augmum. Bao Dao Bu Lao. :salute:brenda, u're welcome.
not advice lah....paiseh
juz my personal feel and experience from my gal which suits her well.
i dunno of any book, as i taught her based on \"my memory\"
btw, gal's school teaches algebra using the mathematical manipulatives, Algebra Tiles...... that allow pupils to have better understanding.
but personally, i found it more confusing, maybe i dunno how to utilise it fully. -
HI Mummies,
I remember something about M1, M2 mentioned when hubby was talking to Maths teacher but totally unable to understand the conversation
. Teacher said students are welcomed to use algebra or models and as long as working is shown/students are comfortable using algebra, no prob. -
its really nice as a parent i was more worry about the preparation of my child to P5,so i get some information from here.

Tisha,
So if using algebra for solving in PSLE, must be fully correct otherwise will end up with zero for that particular Q ?Augmum:
as from MOE black and white reply many years back,
it stated clearly that all mathmaticial logical methods are accepted.
So no penalisation, but no partial marks to be awarded if final answer is wrong.
Thanks for pointing out augmum, DS will sometimes make a calculation error in the last step, and this could mean he will lose out on the marks heavily if using algebra and is careless.
pl note that those words ‘no partial marks to be awarded if final answer is wrong” are NOT officially from MOE.
It was what I had concluded from my own observation from my gal and other classmates in their HW/exams.
As the teacher would not wanna to slowly make out the algebra's workings,
so they only see the final answer to award the marks, as we are aware that algebra workings can be very luan4 (messy).
As for model – drawing method or heuristic approach, there are marking scheme which the teachers followed closely,
so partial marks will be awarded.
When using algebra (or any other methods) to solve problem sums,
I always remind my gal to substitute her final answer to double check for accuracy. -

brenda, only for upper pri and lower sec,
as for current, her Sec 3 maths,
i am unable to help her in certain questions, all given back to teachers long time ago.....

Yalor, but to her, still worth the try,
Yes. No marks if working is wrong for algebra.
as her time taken to derive answers when using algebra as compared to model or other methods is shorter.
with the time saved, can be used to check for accuracy.

Hi Mummies,
I printed out some CA1 Section A Maths for son to attempt…but most of them are not taught yet…so at a loss how to improve on his speed and accuracy.
Has anyone bought Li Fanglan’s ‘Primary 5 FAN-Math MathExpress Speed Maths Strategies’ ? Is this book meant for Section A ? Pls advise. Thank you. -

I heard somewhere (cannot remember now) that for section A, 1 mark = 1 min. I believe Paper 1 is total 40 marks so should take 40 mins to finish paper and 10 mins left to check. Maybe you can pick out the questions already taught and then timed according to how many marks for those questions.
I have not bought the FAN maths so cannot comment. I recall the Maths book by Ammiel Wan thread has some recommendations from Nicklebee on what Maths books to train which section. You may want to check it out.
Hope this helps. -

I guess may be some school is in the faster pace as such you find some topics are not taught yet.
For section A, the questions are straight forward and by exposing to more the children will gain experience once they come across the similar questions in the next paper.
E.g. If the question is asking for area of Triangle that the school is not teach yet, we can refer the text book and brief them the standard formula and how to look out for height and base etc.
I can’t comment in this book since we did not buy. The above is our experience with dd when working on Section A and Section B last year.
Note: You may want to consider to buy more CA1 papers to practice in this area as I find the amount of CA1 papers provided for on line printing are not sufficient for practiciing. Just my 2 cents thought
Hope the information is useful. :celebrate:
