Your son can choose any subject to take, but common combinations are the 3 sciences + 1 humanities, or 2 sciences + 2 humanities. Taking 3 humanities subjects is not allowed.

Most students can choose up to 11 subjects (including third lang, mother tongue, english, etc). But students whose GPA is below 3.6 have more restrictions, if I'm not wrong they can only take up to 10, then those who are below 2.8 can only take up to 9 subjects. The norm is generally 10 subjects.

Students above GPA of 3.6 can take up to 10 subjects which the 10th subject is either 3rd land, CEP, AEP, MEP…
Norm is 9 Subjects. Also take note that RI is implementing a new system which will squeeze some Year 4 syllabus into Year 3 so that the Year 4 will have half of year for their enrichment or OIP.

Year 3 term 1 is a bit hectic especially for my boy who has National competition, Prefect duties and events, next week boarding, test and assignments… I am not sure if other Year 3 parents also shared the same experience.

Maybe someof you parents who have children in RI can help. How does RI usually prepare their students for national competitions such as the various olympiads etc…Do they assign teachers to give extra trainings. Do ex-students come back to train their juniors?

From what i understand from my son, unlike other schools which depend a lot on hiring external experts, RI students are usually trained by their own teachers, alumni who volunteer or even seniors training the juniors. At least that's true for one of the CCAs that my son is in. He participates in competitions throughout the year. I remembered being very surprised, when he just joined RI, to learn that it was the seniors who helped trained them for competitions. Towards the end of Yr 1, he was already involved in giving 'lessons' to the primary school students who participated in the competition organised by RI. During term breaks in subsequent years, he was also involved in training the 'juniors' while receiving 'lessons' from his seniors. While I feel that there's a limit to how much they can learn from peers and ex-students in terms of specialist knowledge as compared to hiring professionals, I am also very impressed with this system. Besides being a good way for ex-students to give back to the school, it also provides opportunity for every student to be a leader and bring down the cost of learning at RI. I don't remember having to pay a lot of extras for my son for activities & CCAs, unlike my experiences with another of my child's school and both their primary school.

9 distinctions: 2 students (2009), 3 students (2010) (almost the same...)
8 distinctions: 84 students (2009), 73 students (2010). In the 2010 slides, 8 distinctions and above are listed as 76, so we have to deduct the 3 students with 9 distinctions. Drop of 10 students from 2009.
7 distinctions: 217 students (2009), 169 students (2010). In the 2010 slides, 7 distinctions and above are listed as 245, so we have to deduct the 76 students with 8 and 9 distinctions. Drop of 48 students from 20009.
6 distinctions: 303 students (2009), 261 students (2010). Drop of 42 students.

Results are still good, but it has gone down from 2009...

Yr 2010, DHS IP & RVH IP re in participation.
Most of DHS & RVH IP guys re otherwise either landed in RJC or HCI fought for the honour in their own names.
We ve to concede that DHS & RVH IP re as good as RJC & HCI.
Btw, RJC & HCI re still miles ahead of the rest of the field.
Hope I am not wrong that RJC & HCI re well balanced in both Science & Human/Arts disciplines. They ve intelligent students and those GEPs re even more intellecturally smart. They should be very science inclined but many of them went to Human programme and Arts stream. Whereas, some of the top JCs put a condition on admission of top 'O' level students to their JCs that they must go to Science stream.

Is it really true that there is less homework in RI? My DS is in Yr 1 and he hardly has any homework. But my niece also in Sec 1 in a neighbourhood school is struggling with piles of homework everyday.

I think it is true.

Every time I ask my DS any homework? He said no homework or he has finished his homework in school. haha, so now it is confirmed since 2 of you said so

For this March holiday, only 1 math worksheet, 1 science worksheet, 4 Chinese worksheets and a few group-work projects.
