Teaching Chinese at Home

ksme:
ksme,During the 1 week holiday, I gently pushed my son to do some chinese reading. Wanted to share this book with all as he enjoyed it very much. It is a Chinese comic book with some science knowledge. I know some people feel that for kids who already can read novel, reading comics may be a step back. For me, it was nice to see my ds enjoying the book. The characters are funny and he sometimes chuckle while reading. Perhaps this may be suitable to help build up reading interest for those kids who do not like reading chinese story books. That was how my ds started with Doraemon comics series before progressing to chinese novels.
I found the various series from the same publisher on dangdang.com and am considering buying since ds enjoys the 1 book we have. I bought my copy from Singapore Maha Yuyi bookstore during the school book fair last year. It cost me approx S$12 for just 1 book (vs Dangdang 69rmb for series of 4 books). For those interested, you may want to check out below links.

Thanks for sharing !
I bought quite a few of these comic books from Popular, but in English. I did not know that dangdang sells the Chinese version, otherwise I would have only bought the Chinese comics.
My kids love to read these comics, they would read them over and over again. I allow my kids to read all the comic books (only those approved by me) that they want, provided that they still read all the long novels that I bought for them. Reading comic books, especially educational ones, are many times better than playing with computer games or PSPs. Chinese comic books certainly helped to build up my love for Chinese when I was in primary school. -

They begin to speak with slight China accent, and their vocab is of higher standrad than before. Is that the kind of improvement you are looking for? :?
Thanks all for ur info.porcupine12trade:

Yup available at ts video. Some neighborhood video shops also sell. I saw them at the video shop next to kfc at Toa Payoh central. Once a week will not be enuff for my kids they watch everyday. Finished all the few hundred episodes already now watching the second time
Mummy of 2, did u see improvement in ur kids Chinese. I read some china parents comments, Haa they don't quite encourage their kids to watch the cartoon, they prefer to buy the books. But I guess for sin parents we r glad our kids willing to watch Chinese prog.
My kids like the 阿虎, dog cartoon that is after 喜羊羊。
Btw my kids are in preschool, so no formal assessment whereby I can gauge if there is improvement, in terms of marks. I am also using SiWu KwaiDu, and my DD, who is in nursery, has more or less finished book 1. I'm happy with her progress where word recognition is concerned.[/quote]haa ya this is the kind of improvement i am referring too... not having too high expectations. thanks! -
after a couple of weeks of \"trying hard to intro and teach chinese\" I see results! I received my books from dangdang.com
I want to thank all the kind mummies here, and daddies too, for all your advices and sharing of experiences!
If i did not find this discussion thread, I think would not be able to instill the interest in my children.
I have gotten the dangdang books for about 1 week plus. My 2 younger kids love the books! and now they look fwd to read chinese books, my #2 who speaks poor mandarin now more willing to speak and speaks better!
Also i followed tamarind advice to continue with the Sage book and not keep repeating for my son, it works! after finishing (straight reading) level 1 book1, my son can recog 70-80% of the words! All these improvements are really good enough for me, thank u tamarind. and my #2 too, she recog more words these few weeks too
the only 1 that is not moved by me is my #1... she is like 走火入魔(correct or not? haa)... she kept reading reading non stop..but eng books only. i know reading is good but she is too engrossed...can someone help me? how do i get her to be interested in reading chinese books too? thanks! -

Hi Tamarind
I'm interested in the Chinese composition books that you mentioned, i.e. 《小学生作文起跑线》 and 《大鼻子李教授新体验作文》. However, dang dang didn't scan and post the contents for these 2 books. If it's not too much of a trouble, could you scan and post selected pages of the 2 books on your blog? If it's not possible, it's ok. Thanks.
Also, I saw another book 《我教儿子学作文》by 肖复兴, an award winning writer. This book is recommended by 中国教育学会家教专业委员会 and came in second on this week's top 10 list of 中小学教辅书. Do you have this one too?
From the reviews, it seems to be an essay-writing guide book for parents. The previews suggest that the author believes parents can start to teach their children essay writing from kindergarten, when children verbalise their essays instead of writing it. I find this very refreshing and would be getting this book for reference.
OK I will take photos of the pages and post in my blog when I am free.
I also ordered 我教儿子学作文, but it will only arrive in March.
Yes I also use small ziploc bags, bought from Daiso.
Tamarind,
I'd like to know more about the 3 compo books 《小学生作文起跑线》, 《大鼻子李教授新体验作文》and 我教儿子学作文 which u mentioned previously.
Are these books teaching the techniques of writing (eg. intro, ending etc), or are they a collation of well-written compos by the kids in China? If they belong to the former category, which level (in Sin) are they more suitable for?
Also, i'd appreciate if you can recommend any books which comprise the latter (ie. collation of well-written compos by P1/2 kids in China).
Thanks in advance. -

Popular bookshop sells the comics in both colour and black and white. I think it is suitable for kids 5 years and above. However, most of our primary schools kids will not be able to read them independently until P4/P5.
You should try to get the colour ones from Popular bookshop. -

I have scanned some pages of 大鼻子李教授新体验作文 and I can share it with you. Just PM me your gmail account. There are one books for each level from P1 to P6.
These books teach the techniques of writing and personally I think that they are very good. They are not easy to use. Parents must be very good in Chinese in order to use them. You can read the scanned pages and decide for yourself whether they will be helpful to you.
I do not intend to let my kids read any well written compositions by P1 and P2 kids in China. I prefer to let them learn from interesting books written by well established writers. -

You are welcome, tamarind. I didn't know they have these in English too. Won't let my son know so he can't bug me to buy the english ones instead of chinese.

Hi porcupine12trade,
You are welcome
What type of English books does your #1 read ? If she likes books written by a particular author, I suggest that you find other books by this author, but translated to Chinese. That may entice her to read books in Chinese.
Another suggestion is to ask her to read out loud from Chinese books, for at least 30 mins a day. Let her read out loud from interesting books, like those written by 杨红樱, or start with the wonderful 不一样的卡梅拉. I find that this is a very effective way of getting my girl to read Chinese novels on her own. After I asked her to read out loud to me for a few months, she started to read on her own.
Do you mean you wish that she is not that engrossed in reading ? You can try to introduce other hobbies to her. My girl likes beading and jewelry making very much, and my boy likes origami. -

The English ones are expensive, about SGD9+ for each book. dangdang is selling at about SGD14 for a set of 4 books ! I did not know the Chinese titles of these books, so I could not find them in dangdang earlier, otherwise I could have saved a lot of money.
