Do you feel that this form of education adds value? I think this is the key point.
My daughter loved her 4 years. I have had to struggle to balance the aspects that I found lacking or over geared in the system But no system is perfect (for every single child 'cos children are all different), so I don't spend too much time looking at the negative. There are ways to work around some of the bumps and the potholes.
I offered to switch her out in Sec 1. I thought she could not cope. She insisted to stay and she had great fun. That's important too. -

Cedar girl's school's COP has risen 10 points over the last decade. I wonder any of you have noticed that. What is the reason for the rise? I have my reasons and answers to that but I'll hear from all of you first.
cedar has taken steps to retain their academically abled girls so that they do not lose their girls to IP after sec 2. Going IP has certainly pushed up their COP last year. i would say the shift back to the new premises plays a part too. -

I have read somewhere that the schools have retained very experienced teachers to be some kind of the respective subjects facilitators and they will then impart effective teaching pedagogy to the new teachers. In this way, the school has a system of retaining effective teaching methodology. I have believed that certain schools may be able to attract good students for no legitimate reasons but for long run of more than 10-20 years, it has to be the schools' practices and ability to add value that will ultimately attract the better students. -

My physics teacher is now teaching in Cedar! And he was one of those who made physics v interesting. counting back, he prob has close to 30 yrs of teaching experience. so i believed they hv several of such teachers, but i noticed cedar does have some young and very vibrant teachers too. My DD enjoys most of her lessons. Her teachers made lessons come alive. But not all lah, she has her share of complaints about some teachers too.
I was told Cedar DSA sports girls are given a lot of attention too to help them cope academically and in their CCA. The DSA girls may enter with COP of 22+ but with the support, they did well academically. that's one area which they added value.
Regarding retaining their talented girls, they hv the talent development (TD) prog. Girls are identified and given greater exposure in their niche area, thru e.g. research collaboration with higher learning institutions, etc.
I hv to admit i wanted to switch DD out to IP in Sec 3, but it will be difficult to get her out of Cedar cos she loves her sch & friends. But i thought maybe she can be persuaded. However, she was selected for TD and after attending the talk, i realised she can get the same quality education / exposure as those in IP schs. And she can still get them in a all-girls environment.
My DD is no RGS or NYGS calibre. She probably ranked middle of her cohort when she entered Cedar. But the opportunities given to her there was immense. -

This was what I meant when I am keen to know specific practices or intangible cultures of schools that add values.

Band 1 School Consecutively For 5 Years
More than one-third of the teachers in Cedar Girls' Secondary School have more than 10 years of teaching experience, according to its Principal, Mrs Ou Yang Geok Cheng. She also commented that Cedar Girls' has a culture of senior teachers guiding the young teachers so that teaching experiences are passed 'down from generation to generation'. This will enable all the teachers to consistently maintain a high standard of teaching . This is one of the school’s success formulae which helps Cedar Girls' to be the only school in the Special/Express stream to maintain its Band 1 position for the last 5 years.
At present, 6 teachers in the school are alumni, including physics teacher Ms Jaclyn Thang. Four years ago, she returned to her alma mater to begin her teaching career. Mr Yau Ming Chin who was her teacher previously is now her 'mentor.'
Ms Thang said that new teachers are usually busy with the daily work and they tend to neglect the broader direction of teaching. Mr Yau who is the Subject Head of Physics, will share his teaching experiences through coffee-break sessions, as well as brainstorming together for ideas when planning activities for the students.
In addition, Principal, Mrs Ou Yang said that all the teachers, both senior and new teachers, are very enthusiastic. The school sets aside 50 minutes every week for teachers to form teams to share their teaching strategies with one another and to celebrate successes.
In order to strengthen the teachers’ sharing of classroom experiences and research, the school has also started a lesson study program in this year. 4-5 teachers within the same department will discuss and select a topic which is more difficult to teach, and to develop appropriate strategies and content to teach the topic collaboratively.
