Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

Now I really see the scene behind the big hoo-ha of reducing weightage of mother tongue last year. -

Hi, to add on - my son's Maths T commented she has seen alot of students doing badly in P5, especially on Fracture and Ratio, but when they come to P6, they suddenly 开窍 and do better, probably because by the time they finish all topics, they can see the big picture and link them better.
I think we have trouble with ratios and fractions. The straightforward sums are ok. He understands the topics but the problem sums are tricky... and he never manages to complete the paper even!! And there were 2 papers that had area of parallelograms and trapeziums. The textbook only documents angles of such four-sided figures.
I tell you... this is super depressing. My poor son. :imdrowning:
Also, u may want to zoom in on certain topics, and use the Challenging Maths Made Easy or Fabian Ng's PSP to go into depth. Since no time to do all, I told my son the plan is to read through all the different types of questions and attempt only the last (presumably more difficult ones) 2-3 questions of each type. Even that I am not sure he has enough time to complete ..
My son P5 CA1 MA results dipped tremendously too. I was just taking stock of the SA1 exam papers yesterday to plan his timetable - wow! 55 papers for the remaining 40+ days before SA1 :shock: No way to finish lah .. not forgetting the assessment books? Must strategize and prioritize already .. Haha, I am glad I am not the only one feeling the heat ... :lol: -

Hmmm... this is smart. If really cannot finish, focus on the big questions. And yeah... I know what you mean by feeling all alone. This forum is really nice. Don't worry too much when you see your kids results dipped in first half of P5, it is usual phenomena. The schools are known to \"slaughter\" these kids and gave them a \"wake-up call\" at this stage, so that they will \"listen\" and \"focus\" more in class to learn better for preparing for P6. Be prepared for CA1 and SA1 results to be \"scary\" and don't get \"heart attack\" on this - it's common. You will see the upward trend by yr end P5. Good luck! -

Personally, I prefer to let my son go through all the SA1 maths topics first by doing topical exercises before attempting to do SA1 papers. Else he will not have the confidence to do the papers and it can be demoralizing. I think confidence building and morale support is very important.

Hi Jess,
This I certainly agree with you. Attempt the topics in assessment books so that he will have better understanding first b4 doing past year exam papers. If my son goes straight into past year paper, he will be very demoralized. -
