I think its both way for me. Destressing me (when I am on my way to becoming a tiger mom) as well as stressing me (when I become too complacent).

 Didn't know this thread has a way of helping one find BALANCE. This is the greatest joke for the day.

This thread indeed has its magical power in balancing the stressful lifestyle for parents and kids

          [

Hi IJJ. thanks for your insights, appreciate it!
Both the current tutor and the new one have not taught PH before, but they had both taught higher chinese before e.g. AiTong, NanYang.
Not sure about familiarity with MOE standards or PH standards, right now, I feel that the current tutor does know PH standard as she commented that PH papers are much tougher than any other schools, even harder than NanYang.

I think being able to customise the learnings to overcome the weakness is critical to the success, so that the time can be optimised rather than used the time for marking the tonnes of tuition homework given. For the new tutor, I reckon I will need to partner closely with her ( and also come into this forum more often to understand how to help my child πŸ˜‰ )
to monitor the progress and give attention to areas of weaknesses.

The notice period is ridiculous in my opinion, there is no agreement since there is no formal offer and acceptance on both parties, so it does not constitute a legal case for sure. All the more this highlight her mercenary attitude and motivation.

          quote=\"IJJ\"]Hi hl124273,

I have been refraining from posting a reply for your tuition issue. Your dd is only in P2, right?

Putting myself in your shoe, I will definitely drop the current tutor and try the new one. Simply because

          1. Poor quality service - unspotted mistakes and lack of explanations. Well, some super tutors can provide superb quality tuitions with tons of students, most simply cannot. It is up to the tutor to decide how many students he/she want to take, but it is up to the parent/child to judge the quality.

          2. Unwilling to go along parental's needs. Parents and child are the clients. Don't let the tutor lord over you. I believe that every child is different and parents know theirs best. If a parent prefers that dec shall have a 2 weeks rest, so be it. I know the 2 weeks break won't hurt mine. If go by your tutor's definition, school holidays should not even exist.

For these, I will drop her without a single hesitation. You dd may object, well, as I told mine, mom always know better. πŸ˜‰

As for the 1 month notice, no, it is not a common practise. I am one impatient person. If I think someone is misleading my child or wasting my child's time, then I would not want to wait/delay any further. And of course, I will not waste money and time on unworthy service. I will terminate immediately, pay her for service she had provided. Period. Sue me if she likes. 😐

Your dd is only P2, lots can be done. Don't fret. Although mine only ever had a pte for the 1st 6 months of P1 (CL), but this is my criteria for selection of tutor if I ever need one again.

          1. Chemistry/rapport between the child and tutor.

          2. Understand the moe/PH school standard and syallabus. - Some boasted a journalist or a high school teacher in China or whatever... as long as he/she is not familiar with moe/PH standard, will not able to focus and see result.

          3. Patient, devoted and systematic. - Only with these, kids will build/maintain interest and be motivated to learn. My girl's ex tutor knew my girl's weaknesses and developed own worksheets to assess and strengthen them. She discussed strategies to work hand in hand with me to optimise resources and efforts.

          4. Teach the child how to fish and not to put the fish right in front of the child.

          5. Respect both the parents and the child.- Listen and discuss.

          HTH!

Wish you find one good tutor soon! I cannot recommend my child's ex tutor as she has gone back to teaching in school, now a CL HOD. I am blessed to know her and have her as a personal friend now. I am sure you will find one great one soon.
so you can imagine how \"advanced\" my gal is ahead of the lessons taught . e.g. school is teaching chapter 1, my gal is chapter 4 or 5.

Advanced is not necessary bad. Most tuition centre today are pitch at higher level, so it is quite common. However based on your reasoning, I will probably change and move on. I keep getting the feeling that MONEY > COACHING for this tutor.

              Just my 2 cents thought.

Yes, I find this tutor mercenary .. she told me upfront when i hired her that the tuition fees must be paid on time in cash, which is fine and reasonable .. but the part about missing tuition for 2 weeks during school holidays is way too much .. and she was asking me if my K1 need tuition from her in January and suggested that I let my K1 try her because PHPP standard is way too high .. I said ok , try once a week, and she charged $50 a lesson for K1 for an hour, which I told her frankly that I don't see any improvement apart from her teaching my gal flashcards bought from popular, and she said she has told me before once a week is hard to see improvement, and suggested I bumped it up to 2x a week, which I did last month and didn't feel it was money well spent. All points back to money.

for ηœ‹ε›Ύε†™θ― - is this considered composition whereby 4 pictures are given ? or one picture given ?

For english compo - 4 pictures given or 1 ?
This morning, my gal told me about her compo excercise she did in school , and gotten 7/10  sounds bad, ya ?
Hi E3, can you recall what was the story about in last year SA1 Paper 1? Just want to have a rough idea and set my expectation right before proceeding to coach my dd in this area. I think it will be tough for my dd...

Wow...testing my memory leh!! Thankfully, my dd's memory is better than me. The teachers will let the P2 kids attempt last year's Papers 1 before the exams. If you check the content page of the Chinese Folder, I believe you can tell how many practices will be assigned to your dd by her teacher.

                For EL:
SA1 - Two boys using a catapult to hit a beehive, the bees attacked the boys, went to clinic for treatment, ultimately learnt their lesson.

SA2 - Hit and run accident on the road. A boy was injured. Eye-witnesses noted down the car plate number, (then buy 4-D...hehe...πŸ˜‰), police, ambulance and paramedics were called etc.

                For CL:
SA1 - A classroom scene. A boy was distracted, not listening to the teacher conducting the lesson.

SA2 - A park scene. People exercising under the sweltering hot sun.

                a thousand thanks.....very useful indeed......

look like i will be able to see 1000 pages when i reach home later...
I came across ε°ζ‹‡ζŒ‡ in one of the newsstand. Its a new CL mag for lower primary which I think its worth a look. Costs $1.

The P4ers are using ε€§ζ‹‡ζŒ‡ as supplement reading material in school.

Btw, I have scanned the ι»˜ε†™ for P4. Very solid CL. So far, no model compo book or guidebook is able match the standard. The phrases/sentences are great if the child can apply on compo/speech. I also learn from the list. Anyone wish to have a copy, pls let me know. I wish not to cause unnecessary worry so am not posting now unless the demand is there. πŸ˜‰

It is more suitable for a Sec. students than a P4 student.
