Hello watmekiasu. My school has students learning violin as young as 3 years old. For 3 years old, they will use a smaller violin like 1/16 size. It always depend on the child's interest and attention span. It also depends on how the teacher sustains their interest as well as their parents encouragement and being part of their learning progress.
hi which schools take in 3 year olds for violin? is it the suzuki method? thanks, , my DS has expressed interest in the violin. -
I think violin strings might be painful for a kid of this young age, likewise instrument like guitar as my child has tried on both before and lost interest in stringed instruments ever since. I dont know which schs are good but my advice is get a really patient teacher because how your child react in the first lesson will determine his future in that instrument learning…
good luck! -
Hi,
My girl (P4) has just decided to join the school’s CCA violin - beginner. Planning to get a basic student size 3/4 for her to start with. Since we don’t have any private teacher to ask, will be getting the ‘school violin teacher’ to help us get one. (I think the teacher is an outsourced vendor as he sells & trade-in violin too)
The teacher has given me 2 brands to choose from - Prillante & Eurostring. Personally I seem to see a lot mentioning Synwin too. I really have no idea what is the diff, all china-made is all I know. Any recommendation from the experienced mommies here? Hope to hear from you soon…as I need to get one by this Fri. Thanks. -
Hi parents,
I’m new to the diff brands of violin and not sure how to choose a good one.
I intent to learn a new instrument, violin and I have no idea how to choose one before I can start my lesson.
May I know which brands, price range suitable for beginner till maybe grade 5? I wish to get one good one, or considerably not bad to start off and continue, before changing it to a better one for higher grade. I reckon that it would be easier for me to pick up? since I have completed my piano and is teaching now.
Thanks! -
Erm… price depends. Since you might be getting a full-sized violin, you might also want to decide whether you are comfortable using it. My ds got his from a luther at waterloo centre but his 3/4 violin is already like 700. There are cheaper ones but he may not be comfortable using them since his teacher didn’t recommend others…

i was wondering are those european made violins are hand-crafted or factory made like those fm china? Lately, my DH came bk from biz trip in japan, enquired from a music shop there, their violins are made fm germany bt not sure if are hand-crafted, price range fm s$400 (1/4 size) to $900 (full size). Izit reasonable or cheaper than those selling locally?
Is synwin hand-crafted violins made in china? We are looking around for a full size violin for my ds, was really confused with the choices. Are synwin hand-crafted violins comparable to those make in europe in term of quality and sound?
Any recommendation for full size violin, my ds is gr4 now. We thought of buying him a better made one compare to his current student violin.
Another probm we have, his current strings (those $2 string) are often change by his tchr but it gt tarnish about half a yr later. i offered to buy better brand one but his tchr say it will also be tarnished. Any one have same problm as me? -

My ds uses Thomastik Vision Titanium strings. It sounds really good and last very long. Have not seen it tarnish. But then again, these strings are quite expensive. Just bought a full-size set for S$74 as a spare set for him this week.
