after a couple of weeks of \"trying hard to intro and teach chinese\" I see results! I received my books from dangdang.com

I want to thank all the kind mummies here, and daddies too, for all your advices and sharing of experiences!

If i did not find this discussion thread, I think would not be able to instill the interest in my children.

I have gotten the dangdang books for about 1 week plus. My 2 younger kids love the books! and now they look fwd to read chinese books, my #2 who speaks poor mandarin now more willing to speak and speaks better! 🙂

Also i followed tamarind advice to continue with the Sage book and not keep repeating for my son, it works! after finishing (straight reading) level 1 book1, my son can recog 70-80% of the words! All these improvements are really good enough for me, thank u tamarind. and my #2 too, she recog more words these few weeks too 🙂

the only 1 that is not moved by me is my #1... she is like 走火入魔(correct or not? haa)... she kept reading reading non stop..but eng books only. i know reading is good but she is too engrossed...can someone help me? how do i get her to be interested in reading chinese books too? thanks!

      Hi porcupine12trade,
      You are welcome 😄

What type of English books does your #1 read ? If she likes books written by a particular author, I suggest that you find other books by this author, but translated to Chinese. That may entice her to read books in Chinese.

Another suggestion is to ask her to read out loud from Chinese books, for at least 30 mins a day. Let her read out loud from interesting books, like those written by 杨红樱, or start with the wonderful 不一样的卡梅拉. I find that this is a very effective way of getting my girl to read Chinese novels on her own. After I asked her to read out loud to me for a few months, she started to read on her own.

Do you mean you wish that she is not that engrossed in reading ? You can try to introduce other hobbies to her. My girl likes beading and jewelry making very much, and my boy likes origami.

        ksme,
        Thanks for sharing !

I bought quite a few of these comic books from Popular, but in English. I did not know that dangdang sells the Chinese version, otherwise I would have only bought the Chinese comics.

My kids love to read these comics, they would read them over and over again. I allow my kids to read all the comic books (only those approved by me) that they want, provided that they still read all the long novels that I bought for them. Reading comic books, especially educational ones, are many times better than playing with computer games or PSPs. Chinese comic books certainly helped to build up my love for Chinese when I was in primary school.

You are welcome, tamarind. I didn't know they have these in English too. Won't let my son know so he can't bug me to buy the english ones instead of chinese. 😉

My son enjoyed the book and I am considering buying more. Good to hear that you approve of these comics too. :celebrate:

The English ones are expensive, about SGD9+ for each book. dangdang is selling at about SGD14 for a set of 4 books ! I did not know the Chinese titles of these books, so I could not find them in dangdang earlier, otherwise I could have saved a lot of money.

          Dear Tamarind,

          :thankyou:

I have been wanting to write this post for so long but have been caught up with so many things! Finally managed to get down to doing it.

One of the best things that happened this year is stumbling on this thread and getting to know 杨红樱 and 四五快读 from your generous sharing.

四五快读works for my P2 boy and his word recognition is so much better. Reading aloud is still not so fluent but at least, he can read and understand his comprehension passages better. We have just finished Book 4 and started on Book 5 today. Rather slow, but well, rather slow than never 😄

From your book list, I've picked up a few of 杨红樱's books from my DD's (P6) school book fair. Imagine my surprise when she told me to pick up a few more \"笑猫“books for her! When I told her that a family friend will be bringing some books back from Beijing next week, she actually said that \"she can't wait to get her hands on those books!\"

So far, besides 杨红樱's books (mainly 笑猫 and 马小跳), she has also read 佐贺的超级阿嫲,我是白痴 (王淑芬)and 忆堂的夏天 (谢倩霓)。

She reads a wide variety but she likes enid blyton. I'll try what you have suggested, but i suspect she doesnt enjoy chinese books coz her word recog is not enough. I have been focusing on my younger ones past months, neglected her. I will start 45kuaidu asap! Yes i want to borrow/buy 杨红樱 books, however, i find either too difficult or comes with HYPY, am I right or am I missing some titles.

Yes, she puts reading first and I think she gets her priority wrong. Sometimes she will rush to read rather then complete her other tasks which are more impt :(. I told her many many times, but still the same. As for other hobbies, hmm sometimes she will write stories or draw which I am ok. I tried to get her watch TV (chinese n eng) but she not keen, I'll continue to try guide her to get her priorities right. I know reading is good, but i think she needs to prioritise, at least get the impt tasks done then go to reading. another thing, I am concern abt her eyesight...its so tough to balance!

Can anyone help me to clarify what is the difference between these 2 佐贺的超级阿嬷 :

                  http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20745160

                  http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20669176

I am not sure if they are the same although according to the details, the chapters seem to be different.

                  Tamarind,
Did you buy all the books in this series? Do you know how many are there ? (Seems like 5 to me but not sure) Why don't they sell it as a series, so much easier. Looks quite interesting to me and thinking of placing an order but wondering whether I should get all the related books and which ones are they.

Btw, for 窗边的小豆豆, do you recommend the whole series or just the first book?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I only have this book :
                    佐贺的超级阿嬷(亲子共读版)
                    http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20669176

Highly recommended for all kids and parents ! It is about living in extreme poverty, but still being optimistic in life :
                    即使生活再艰难,仍要以微笑去面对,仍不要放弃对未来的希望,这就是阿嬷想要传达给德永的人生真谛吧。

I am not sure how many books there are in the series, but I think all are very worth reading.

窗边的小豆豆 a lot harder to read. Brenda's daughter has read it at P5, and that is very impressive for her age.

I recommend getting just the 佐贺的超级阿嬷(亲子共读版) and 窗边的小豆豆 to try out first.

Actually it is very good to have an older girl who loves to read, she sets a very good example. You will see the positive influence in your younger ones when they grow older.

My older girl reads even when she is having her lunch and dinner, and she reads when she goes to the toilet to do her business. My younger boy is influenced by her and he can spend a few hours reading books.

My girl used to read only English novels before she enters P1. By the end of P1, she declared that she likes to read Chinese novels better. It can take only one year for the \"reversal\" if we find the right books for our kids, and also read with them.
