Radiation levels soar at Japan nuclear plant

      http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1119095/1/.html

\"The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi plant said it had detected radiation levels 10 million times higher than usual in leaked water at reactor two, as white steam continued to rise from the tsunami-battered facility....
Japan's nuclear safety agency has ruled out an immediate threat to marine life and seafood safety, saying the radiation would be quickly dispersed by tides, amid some signs of gradual progress at the site.

      Erm... thanks for the re-assurance...
But then again... dispersed to where??!!!
      Duh...

'Extremely high' radiation levels false alarm

          http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1119143/1/.html

\"JAPAN: The operator of a crippled nuclear plant in Japan has retracted an announcement that radiation in water near one of the reactors was 10 million times higher than normal, Jiji Press reported Sunday.

Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said the mistake was due to confusion between readings of iodine and cobalt in the water....\"

Erm... like that also can ah? Simply press the delete button?
Which is true and false? Your guess is as good as mine...

              28th March 2011

The highly radioactive stagnant water in the Reactors’ basement is hindering access to the cooling pumps.
The radiation at Unit 1 – 4 are all in excess of 260 mSv,
with Unit 3 which used a mixture of Uranium and Plutonium fuel, highest at 1,750 mSv.
Radiation in excess of 100 mSv increases cancer risk. Workers are permitted an exposure of max 250 mSv before they have to be withdrawn. In this case, max exposure time is 15 – 20 mins, hardly enuf time to access and repair the pumps.

The task now must surely be to find the source(s) of the radiation leakage and get those fixed ASAP before work can be done on the pumps. Don’t look good as there is probably already a partial meltdown.

                  Well, sxxx happens.
Japan Cabinet Secretary General officially reprimanded TEPCO for erroneous announcement causing unnecessary alarm.

So now either miracle or to hear the worst possible news from Japan
                    All is not lost yet.
Over the weekend, operations began to replace the seawater with fresh water containing boric acid for Units 1 -3.
Unit 2 was the last to undergo this water change beginning on 26th March morning.

Lighting from external power source was restored to Central Control Rooms of Units 1 -3 by 1700 hours on 26th March,
enabling engineers to check condition of equipment.

                    So there is some progress.
Then they encountered the problem with the highly radioactive stagnant water in the basement.

A good piece of news is that the three workers exposed to radiation of bwt 2,000 - 6,000 mSv were discharged from hosiptal this afternoon.

News coverage said that radioactive exposure has spread to China including Shanghai. Quite worried as DH is going to Shanghai on work trip…
