      Hi Champion,
Home Study is discontinued...although it's not bad, it's not possible to find this. I wanted to get Home Study P6 but it's not avail.
My daughter doesn't have much prob with grammar but her vocab needs to be worked on.

Yes , Janet - Mine too  I have to work on her vocabulary :P.

Her teacher told me she doesn't read the whole sentence and just assumes. This week, teacher will ask her for 1-to-1 and ask her to read the sentence to her...to determine whether she knows how to read or simply being playful. We talked on the phone for 20 min last Friday regarding her behaviour and learning attitude.

Yes , Janet - Mine too  I have to work on her vocabulary :P. At times I can get very tired when she literally does not make an effort to attempt to the Qs and just expect me to TELL her the answer :x . I get her to check the dictionary and write down the meaning for the new vocab words. Then read the Q again before she chose the correct answer for the MCQ Qs.

I do not know whether my method is correct? :? It is very time consuming - apparently 1 hour to do 15 MCQs compare to 10 minutes she can finish 15 MCQs for grammar 😢. Every time after finish voacb worksheet, she will be like,\"Errr....finally, I finish fighting the war!\" As for me, it will be like,\" :!: , 1 hour to do 15 MCQs! Really long yo!\"

        Hi Champion,
I have given up asking my child to check dictionary. He can locate the words but will come back and tell me that he does not know what the meaning is trying to say. :stupid: He now only uses his dictionary as thesaurus for compo writing.
I usually plan and allocate work to him on Mondays. For any questions that he does not know how to do or any words he does not understand/read (CL), he is to circle them. He still needs to attempt these questions. I will mark by Saturday night. Then on Sundays, we spend around 2hrs going through all the errors, clarifying all doubts (that is, circled words). A lot of time is usually spent going through compre section. The dining table will be piled with guidebooks and dictionary for ease of explanation. We will go through all these circled words again during exam revisions.
1hr for 15MCQ can be really tiring.

          Hi teh_oh,
Yes, 1 hour to do 15 MCQs of Vocab really tiring but that includes in-between toilet breaks (at least 3 times) and a little snacks. This only happens when she is doing Vocab but if I ask her to work on Grammar, she can do at least 3 worksheets (3 x 15 MCQs = 45) within 30 minutes independently and lesser frequent visits to the washroom :rotflmao:.

            HI Champion,

It’s not just tiring but also frustrating to take 1 hour for MCQ.
My daughter tells me she needs to use toilet, drink water, wants food and sharpen pencils when I coach her in her work. It’s endless load of nonsense every night.

              Hi Janet,

Yes! Very frustrating and I was like a \"Mad Woman\" raising my voice ALWAYS with the 2 important key words,\" Hurry up!\". But she can do the grammar worksheet independently and able to DO at least 3 worksheets each day for me to mark in the night ....Really must find a way & the stamina to coach VOCAB else I will be the one :faint: 1st.

                Hi champion,

Mine has prob with vocab than grammar. Doesn’t read whole sentence and assumes. Quite poor thing to see her forgetting what has been taught but surely there must be a way.

My gal also have the same problem.

Assume + careless = wrong = lose marks

Can children to train to be less careless or be focused when reading questions? I dont know. Still trying to learn from other parents.... I was told that this is part of gowing up process and they will outgrow the carelessness in due course...

Carelessness is part and parcel...that I must accept esp in exam environment. What we can do is to hope they minimize the careless mistakes. With my son, I will show him how many marks he has lost bcos of careless mistakes...and if he had been more careful, those marks would have increased his grand total.

                      Just my two cents worth:

In my experience, children do not necessarily outgrow carelessness. I see it in adults every day.

The solution lies in helping children to be more aware of their own mental processes. A fashionable term you will come across is 'metacognition'.

I find that children who focus on playing a musical instrument often transfer those concentration skills to academic areas.

The best method I have come across, however, is meditation. I have seen a lot of children with a variety of learning difficulties, and normal children too, benefit from meditative practice.

Wasn't there an article in The Straits Times last year about how meditation and yoga have helped children to focus better at the Indian international schools here?

                      Just a thought ... a calm thought.
