        A [----------------][----------------][----------------]

        B [----------------]

        A [-][-][-][140][-][-][-][140][-][-][-][140]

        B [-][-][-][140]

        9.1 m = 910 cm

        [-][140][-][-][-][140][-][-][-][140]-------->910
        [-]--------> (910 - 140*3) / 7 = 70

        At first , the length of string A = 2 * 70 + 910 = 1050 cm or 10.5 m (Ans)

          I just joined the forum as I am at my wits’ end on how to provide some effective help to my twins for their P5 Maths. They didn’t take Maths tuition until this year. Whilst they have been coping well, I was in a shock when I saw the P5 "Paper 2" Problem Solving (yes, the 5 marks Qns…)and they are starting to struggle (* and of course, there are some Qns which I can’t even solve!)…hmm… my 1st experience as a mum & journey to PSLE.

          Can you provide me with some advice on how to "train" my kids to improve their Problem solving skills esp. those in the Paper 2 of the Maths exam paper? Currently, I give them past exam papers to practice but there are always a number of Qns which they have difficulties with.

          Many thanks.

            Hi, we bought the following books for refereence when come across the problem in 2009 P5 papers last years:

            Challenging Maths Problems Made Easy
            i-Excel Heuristic and Model Approach - Level 5 and Level 6
            onsponge Book 5 (reqested by school

            Method like branching method, unit transfers etc all these can be learn from the first two books mentioned above. If still cannot solve then escalate the problem to the forum for help.

            Note: you can also source for any suitable books at the Popular

            Hope the above useful.

                Any help to solve this homework problem through model method is much appreciated!

                Mrs Tay baked some cookies. She gave 5/7 of them to her mother and 45 fewer cookies to her neighbour than what her mother received. If she had 15 cookies left, how many cookies she give to her neighbour?

                - Many Thanks
                Tina

                  Can anyone help me on the below question.

                  Sandra had twice as many apples as oranges at first. She removed 4 apples and 3 oranges each time. In the end, there were 18 apples and 1 orange left. How many fruits did Sandra have at first?

                  Thanks.

                      [3][3]…[3][1][1+2][1+2]…[1+2][1] apples
                      [3][3]…[3][1] oranges
                      <1u>

                      number of groups –> (18 - 2)/2 = 8

                      1u –> 8 x 3 + 1 = 25
                      Sandra had 3 x 25 = 75 fruits at first.

                        I think the confusion I had earlier was about how to compare 5/7 and less by 45.

                        Thank you very much! Now I understand.
                        Your clear illustration is worth a million words. 😄
