Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

Yes, we have to bond and make sure we can help kids get through SA1 but stay sane at the same time.

Hi Mummies,

My son is banded into a class which is strong in Math & Science.
I was shocked to hear that class average for Science (CA1) was 75 and he was below average for this subject…supposedly his stronger subject. Now worried how to prepare him for SA1…esp if everything from P3/4/5 will be tested. Any advice pls ?

firstly, breathe slowly

From your past few posts regarding this topic, I can see that you are really worried about having P3 and P4 topics in the exams too. It's OK.

What you can do is have his past CA & SA exam papers and go through them. Focus on mistakes he made - he has been strong in science, so this should not take long. Ensure he now knows how to answer those questions.

After that, get him to do a few exam papers (those top schools one). Just 2 or three are enough.

Should I let son practice using past year exam papers or SA1 chapter in assessment books ? Saw SA1 revision in 3 of son’s Math assessment bk like Simon Eio’s Score in Math, Step by Step and another title. Pls advise. Thank you.

I have been reading that the mommies have setup and following some revision timetable etc.....can anyone kind enough to share? I tried 3 years ago and abandon as I never did follow through. Time to start afresh and hence, curious how are other mommies doing it

Never worked for us too. Most days so many last minute things from school or homework that it is impossible to follow our planned timetable. Now, I just plan high level on weekly basis.

It has been a really busy term2. P5 camp,napfa, supplementary and all. I can see ds is on catch-up mode. Does anyone give regular supplementary vitamins or food which has proven useful? Ds just take regular meals & vit C. Does essence of chicken helps? Or boiled soup?

Am I helping him by planning for him or doing more harm. How is he going to cope in secondary. I’m very tempted to let him fall for his SA1 as a wake-up call as I noticed that my DS only does revision as told. If no instruction given, he will only finish his work. He is complacent, I think.

my thots too. So far, I have not been very involved (just like to buy assessment/guidebk ) but after seeing the mommies here so dedicated, I'm a little more motivated....more to show my kids that I am with them. But I'm also concerned and want them to be independent asap, they have to be responsible for their own studies/results. We can only support so much.....

While both my kids are doing fine currently phew......I do feel that they are a little complacent. Also, no push = just finish schoolwork enough. Dun think that's enough to score well in PSLE.

DS-P5 has been in Band1/high Band2/As cos in neighborhood sch, never see REAL world. So unless he hit lows, he would continue to think \"EASY LAH\". I too want a wake-up call for him....hence, searching for tough tough materials to 挫他的锐气 and make him realised he's in a small pond.
DD-P4 was complacent until her transfer to a better school this year.....she realised there are sooooo many smarter kids out there, not just academically, in CCAs too. With her CA1 dropping to 70-80+ range, she realised she needs to work a lot harder......finally....... Tho more nuah, she also 天真 cos' secretly harbors hopes to beat the top kids, but knowing her 料, hard lah :lol: So long she try her best, that's good enough.
With my kids' 2 examples, I do believe some setbacks are good.....as long as not too drastic and demoralise them.

SA 1 is just about 3 weeks from now. I felt like no time to breathe already, more anxious than my gal. She only score 80/100 for the trial test. Her teacher said it's already very good .But I still feel can get more improvement. There are about 18 problems sum ,so to really score, they must be very confident for problems sum, if not

To me, our kids are still in Primary school, we must plan for them, if we just sit back ,so will they .Unless you had send them for regular tuition, enrichment, if not it really 50% depends on us, 50% on their own effort.
