Chinese Assessment Books

Hi Janet,


I can't rem the exact titles/author ( thrown away alrdy) but think I had 3+1 assmt bks for DS in P6 :

1. EPH published - chapter by chapter revision
2. EPH published - also chp by chp revision
- but I rem there's a difference in difficulty between the 2 EPH bks I got for him. Think one alternates OE Compr, the other has OE compre. in every chp.
Also, one of them has revision after every 2-3 chps...

3. SAP published - also chp by chp revision. DS found this the most challenging amongst the 3.

4. After T has finished covering the 6B txtbk, I got him another Bk which test on indiv. sections. There wasn't much choice then as last yr was the 1st yr of the new syllabus. We didn't have time to finish this ( in fact, most of the Compre - both OE and MCQs were left undone) - we mainly concentrated on those 词语 MCQs, 短文填空 qns.

Oh, I did get a set of papers fm a vendor wh. set up stall in DS's sch - publisher forgotten... This is a set of 5 or 6 full set exams papers - meaning they cover everything fm Oral (think so), LC, Compo, and the usual Paper 2.
Personally found this q.useful, thou again Compre not completely done.

Also, when Top Sch prelims papers were avail, we also practised on the indiv sections. We didn't buy them last yr, but some kind soul (mrswongtuition) uploaded for us. (belated thanks mrswongtuition...)

LC and Oral - we got this Learners 怡学(by 陈岩) bk - it comes with a CD for the LC& Oral (the passage reading part only).　Ｑ．ｕｓｅｆｕｌ　ｆｏｒ　ｕｓ　ｔｏｏ
Ｏｒａｌ＝ｗｅ　ｕｓｅｄ　ｔｈｉｓ　Ｒａｆｆｌｅｓ　Ｐｕｂｌｉｃａｔｉｏｎｓ　（华文口试一本通) - for both P5 & 6.

CL assessment books harder to get, compared to Science, Eng & Math.

My cupboards are already full with P6 assessment, slowly accumulated from end of P4 and visits to Popular every now and then this year.

Don’t quite fancy EPH CL assessment books now. Some by SAP are quite difficult. So I am going to do my homework and get what is really practical and useful.

Hi Champion,
I have the second book. I bought it last year before SA2 because it looks good (not an impulse buy as I had put off this purchase for sometime before buying it eventually). For every model compo, there is 2 model essays; 1 is like 'standard' essay and one is 'superior' standard. My boy is obviously only 'standard'. There is also useful vocab with English translation inside. However, I find that it is not as comprehensive, so I bought another one. I bought below range of CL compo book recently. While the languages used inside is not 'creative writing' standard, but it is the level of standard that I hope my child can at least achieve. It is decent enough, with only 1-2 new phrases for every model essay, so quite managable to digest. The book below is more on 'compo' writing than 'creative writing', while the orange book has 2 references per picture, one on 'compo' standard and one in CW standard (IMO). I used this more often than the one in orange above because the level of writing and writing style suits my child. And they have short questions to prompt the child to write. I bought Level 4 instead of level 3 because level 3 is really more basic. But level 3 has a small section that teach how to write more descriptively. That is something I have to forgo. if your child's standard is higher, you can try P5 level or instead go for other compo books that focus on creative writing.

For Chinese, I revise 短文填空 more often as son is weak in this area and Comprehension OE. This assessment is not bad.

Thanks for the recommendation :celebrate:. Just called up SAP to check - this book is only available from P4 onwards so probably wait for Popular 20% Discount in June or Dec to get the P4 copy.

I've was around Popular just now and popped in to get more details on the above as I think too little info given, difficult for parents to evaluate. Here it goes :

1) EPH 考好华文必备练习 田心编 - this assmt bk has chp by chp rev & also SA1/2 & PSLE mock exam paper (only Compo & full Pap 2) . It also has 复习 after every 2 - 3 chapters. It has a list of 词语 b4 each chp . Each chp rev paper is exactly the format of PSLE exam Pap 2. Gen. find this bk q.useful & not too challenging - so IMO q. a gd starting pt.

2) EPH 课堂华文测验 黄海君编 - ch by chp revision

3) EPH 每周华文课文复习陈炎.李妍合编- chp by chp rev with 复习. If rem correctly, this is the most difficult of the 3 EPH titles.

Oops...realised I didn't get the SAP assmt bk for P6 afterall (think due to late release of the title). And I've got only EPH titles! Personally we found these titles were able to meet our needs last yr (disclaimer : not related to EPH at all...) - they were of differing stds, some bks have more intensive ex ( ie full paper), some alternate between having OE Compre in one chap & MCQ Compre in the next.

BTW, rem DS sch used this Victoria publication : 每课一练强化练习 - T assigned as HW.

We also have the Greenleaf 青叶 Pic Compo guidebk
(精编小六华文看图作文全攻略) which Brenda10 listed. Personally, we found it useful as it has vocab list with meaning listed, leading qns to ask, story outline & of course, the actual model compo.

P.S. Went to Popular assmt bk section after a long absence & realized a lot of EPH titles now has this 冠军王listed on it. Not sure marketing gimmicks or latest titles. The EPH titles I listed were found on the shelves.
