My elder son who's poor in Chinese also got by PSLE by lots of memorisation. Their school CL teacher drilled them at it. Had lots of \"mo xie\" to make sure they memorised lots of stuff. This son got \"A\" for his CL. Not a great feat, since some 70-80% of singapore students get A for CL in PSLE? But a great feat for a boy that was always getting C & B and never an A. I never allowed him to do HCL in upper pri.

And yes, he's doing HCL in sec, now in sec 2. It's compulsory in his school.

So yes, memorisation has it's plus points. Now our younger one is doing some memorisation on his own accord too. This boy is a consistent \"A\" for CL and getting \"merit\" for HCL. So hope he does even better.

Now I can also see dd has more cheng yu, new vocabulary tie xie and mo xie during this period. I think getting an \"A\" should not be a probelm so long as compo. don't write out of point.

So far, out of the 3 of my older children, only no.3 now doing HCL, so it's a 1st for us. I allowed him to do since he so super \"cheena\".

Seems that for HCL students, they advise them to do \"Ming Ti\" compo, but for non-HCL students, they ask them NEVER to do \"Ming Ti\". Just an observation.

True. This is DD CL teacher advise too. She rather them score around/above the average rahter than \"8 marks\" lah.

True for DS's case (non HCL P6) - T's strict instruction : NOT TO ATTEMPT ming ti compos under any circumstances! šŸ˜„

At least for my son's case, the probability of writing out of point for ming ti compo is much higher compared to picture compo.

Agree that for those who have a flair for Chn lang, it shd be easier to score if you write ming ti ( provided not out of pt). Can u imagine PSLE markers reading hundreds of pic compos with almost similar story lines? Your essay will need to be q.different, yet still stay relevant to the pics in order to really score. By the same token, pic compo is definitely much \"safer\" for kids who are more avg in their CL std. :celebrate:

Hi, my kid is 5 years old and speaks English most of the time at home. I’m worried about his Chinese language and think I should find him an enrichment course. Anyone knows a better centre that provides interesting classes to learn Mandarin? Appreciate your opinion!

no matter whatever course by whichever centre you ended with eventually, do have the right expectation.

do not expect wonders or miracles from a few hours per week. Languages needs constant practise, in reading, in speech and in writing to do well.

Besides the enrichment course, you might want to reinforce with chinese books, chinese cartoon or educational programme, and to communicate with him in Mandarin only on fixed certain days of the week.
