Still deciding between one-to-one Vs group...finance plays a part on top of petrol and time travelling. The tutor which neighbour recommended us has yet to get back to me, but the Maths centre just called hubby to inform him that son can start lessons. Having a headache deciding now :?:
Hi Janet
It’s not an easy decision. Is the Maths centre has trail lesson to try on? -

To enroll my son at this late hour means one thing - DESPERATE. So just have to make do.janet_lee88:

This centre is recommended by his classmate's mom. The tutor which neighbour recommended is packed and can only start after SA1. -

My guess is that Brenda is herself REALLY good at Math. Otherwise, there is no way to help the child cope. Also I really salute Brenda for her foresight :salute: in intervening in early P4. This gives her girl a good foundation and because there was early intervention, her girl is far less stressed.
I was just coasting along over confident (and relaxed) because I thought I was an experienced Mommy. This P5 experience has been a humbling one that showed me that I need to keep learning about parenting and adjust my attitudes with the times.
Hi Chenonceau
 My Maths is average lah. I had big concern when I saw her Maths CA1 - 66 and CL SA1 - 67 (no exam for CL CA1) during the P4. As I use to heard from friends that by P5 there would be a drop of around 20% on marks and that mean dd may fail both subjects if nothing is being done. As such, we put in a lot of effort on maths and expose dd to more CL resources too. All these really help to strengthen her foundation and help her to face lesser problem when she moved up to P5. Perpahs is due to our problem surface much earlier lah. -

Hi Brenda and all parents here,
After reading from what you all have posted, I started to feel a bit nervous liao:nailbite:. Guess I have to start preparing my P3 gal strong in her Maths foundation so that she will learn to face much tougher and challenging questions when she reaches P4 and later on in P5.
Thank you all for your sharing and I am learning by reading all the posts here :grphug: -

Hi Janet - Maths tuition centre tends to coach by topic. If your child starts off with them at the beginning of a topic, that will be easy for him to grasp any new concept. However, if they are in the middle of a topic, which is likely so at this time of the year, or more likely so, doing revision now which means ALL taught topics are 'rojaked' together, it maybe tough for your son when the fundamental of specific concepts are weak. Of course they will explain difficult questions, but not so much how to use a specific method to solve, since those were supposedly taught in the beginning of specific topics, but more of HOW to decipher the question and decide WHICH method to use. That itself is a skill set but double challenging if the kid doesn't know the method (eg unit transfer) in the first place. To enroll my son at this late hour means one thing - DESPERATE. So just have to make do.
This centre is recommended by his classmate's mom. The tutor which neighbour recommended is packed and can only start after SA1.
Do check with that centre of where they are, what are they going to do the next 2 weeks and how are they going to it.
I will suggest your DH to learn the Unit Transfer method. It is really NOT difficult for any adult who is equipped to teach all other methods we learned during our days. 1 of my friends, who has a P5 son too, knew about this Unit transfer method from our casual gatherings, just bought the Challenging Maths Problem Made Easy last weekend (I helped her to buy, haha). It is definitely achievable for your DH to understand that within 1-2 concentrated reading. It is not that difficult to teach P5 as well, especially if they are ok with model drawing, because it is all about Parts and Units, and common multiple.
Although my son now knows how to use this method, and is really pleased with himself that it helps him to solve so many questions which he frown upon in the past (he was TEACHING his DAD that method yesterday, proudly, ha!), but I am not saying that it is a sure hit - if the question is slightly trickier, he will be stucked as well, actually me too. But at least he now can solve 80% of those he couldn't previously, which is really a morale boaster. In fact, if your DS is learning Ratio in sch now (mine is), it is a perfect timing coz the Onsponge questions expect students to use that method to solve most of the questions, so HW from Onsponge serves as a \"revision\" session for him
I am a 过来人,I just hope I knew it EARLIER! So now am very eager to share with as many people as I can to reduce suffering that can be avoided! -

Oh ya, I just told another P4 parent about it, she is so relieved to know that and started on Onsponge with her dd, now reaping the benefitsHi Chenonceau

Hi JRLam,
Thanks for your helpful advice. I’ve cut and copy your post to hubby.
Math is completely greek to me. Yeah, have to find out what the centre is doing these 2 weeks. Hope son knows what the enrichment centre teacher is teaching when he attends this Fri.
Son’s teacher just returned the Onsponge Math to allow parents to work on it. -
Hello everyone,
SA1 fever hit you yet?
My DD had compo exams today and will be having oral tomorrow.
Hope she has the stamina to last till the last paper on 12 May as she tends to fall sick this time every year… -
Yes, hit us big time !
Peony, compo exams on different dates ? Ours paper 1 and paper 2 same day, with a break inbetween.
I’ve been boiling soup every few days. It has been a really tough term 2. We will take a good rest after SA1.
All the best to P5 mommies and kiddos.
