Not sure if the figures are published. I heard from parents of different GEP cohorts about the ratio (2:1) before I attended the GEP briefing last year. During the briefing, the breakdown was disclosed and as expected was very close to that ratio mentioned. When I spoke to my child's paediatrician, whose boy was previously from the programme (in late 80s/early 90s) as well, he mentioned about the ratio too. His reasoning was that boys in general are better at tackling logical/IQ/Maths/general abilities questions. Hence, you see more boys than girls in these programmes.

The ratio might not be due just to IQ type questions. Has it occured to anyone that it might also have to do with government policies of wanting more boys in GEP. Social engineering, just like how they have quotas for the number of boys and girls in Medicine in University.

Of course, it is not co-incidental! My son's batch (2006 - P4) also same ratio. A reliable source told me it's harder for the girls to get selected (quota lah). Therefore those girls in GEP tend to be the better performers in every co-hort.

I notice in the result namelist there are a few with private training centre instead of primary school names. I thought students can only register for this competition through their school ?? My son missed the opportunity because his school doesn't want to participate

My son registered thru private centre last year as his school claimed that he had not submitted the registration form.

My son also attends olympiad training at a private centre. Too bad, my son's sch simply din want to send any students to this competition. It was also stated very clearly on NUSH website that registration is only allowed thru schools. So I wonder how come there are students from private centres in the list.

I am still a little confused after reading this thread :? ...kekkee

My boy is now is P1..he is very interested in maths and can grasp new concepts very fast. He is currently doing P2 maths but able to do certain topics at higher level.

What is the youngest age for math competitions? Do we have to register thru school or centers only? What do they learn when kids attend private centers?

Different maths competitions have different age requirement. For example NMOS is for P4 and P5. I think P1 or P2 is a bit too young to think about maths competition. you might want to think about GEP selection test first because if your son is really gifted in maths, there is a very good chance that he will be selected for GEP. Please take note that school text book’s maths is quite different from competition’s maths. A kid can score 100% in school test but that does not mean that the kid can do well in maths competition. You need to be truely gifted in maths in order to do well in maths competition.
