Preparing kids for P5 in 2011
-
Hi QuiteKSMum
We are also considering the school like RVH, TKGS, Chung Cheng High, Nan Hua etc. However, all these have to depend on the T-score that dd will get this year. -
Hi Jedamum,
Agree, our choices would probably be similar. I will try to let my kids study around west area, not so tiring. But first, think I need to familiarize with the abbr. of the different sch  , only recognise some like RVH, RGS, RI, SJI, NYGS etc hee hee.
Hmmm.....maybe you can share share your list? I am quite blur on all these right now, set my mind on RVH....but realised not easy so need backup plan.
I too have started observing how the kids from nearby sec schools behave ....have already ruled out 2  (result & behaviour) Guess I should also start going some open house this year...... anyone knows if I can bring P4 kid along? Wanna 1 stone 2 birds....save 1 trip, dun have to go through same process with the younger one
-
cwc,
Shd be no prob bringing your younger kids to the Open Houses. Last yr 1 or 2 schs chartered buses to bring interested students ( fm P4 onwards) to the OH in son's school. I was still wondering why some of the P6 kids were like so small in size ...

Peony, your camp is closer to QuiteKSMum.
Jedamum, cwc and me, I think we are in similar camps. Jedamum, you are starting early ! I think our camps are close.
Let's try to keep to avoid quotes and use abbreviations to reach a εΏη § level and minimize personal info, ok ?
cwc, you can make a guess about abbreviations by looking at the Secondary Network area or moe's http://app.sis.moe.gov.sg/schinfo/SIS_DirSvc.asp
Ds is not very consistent and looking at the Chinese now, I need to be realistic about options :
RVH - this is in my ζε°θ«ε category. If miracle really happens, yes, why not ?
BPGHS - this is my 2nd ζε°θ«ε, but I've heard they are the attract the- best-expect-the-best (Peony's analogy) so I am also still thinking
SCSS - jedamum, since you are so near, can share more info with us. As far as I have researched, this is quite a good school too.
Actually I am more concerned to know the schools with not-so-good school culture and general cohort. Teenage years and especially boys, peer influence is important. Also, I hope none of us need to go through this but if there's a decision to be make between express in a \"?\" school versus normal in a \"good\" school, this knowledge will come in handy.
However, it is kind of sensitive to mention about which schools to best-avoid-if-possible, we don't want to offend the parents there.
Regarding forthcoming with sharing, actually even in the same cohort, we feed the kids same food, use same assessment and guide books, go to same tuition center, still the results will turn out different - beyond our control, ya ? So I hope to see some sharing here. -
Hi. Is SCSS = Swiss Cottage Sec Sch?
I heard that Commonwealth Sec Sch is a good 2nd-tier sch, COP abt 235+. My neighbour, who is a lawyer, was actually quite disappointed when her son didn't get into the likes of HCI, but now is very pleased with him in Commonwealth Sec. She said the principle and teachers there are sincere and she can feel the good vibes

What about SST (School of Science & Technology) at Clementi? However, note that this school takes in quite a number of students by DSA, before PSLE. I heard so far the SST average COP for PSLE is about 240.
For those in the West, can also consider Nan Hua Secondary. -
In the West, if COP>260, can go HCI, RI; COP>250 can go RVH; COP>240 can go NanHua, Bt Panjang. But for COP btw 230-240, I only know of Commonwealth Sec, which is supposed to be good, anyone knows of any other gd sch in West or nearby? I am in favor of those good 2nd-tier ones too, hopefully not so stressful yet good influence.

Pen88n:
Is SST a strictly DSA-school? If so, unless u are the cream for Maths / Sci, else it is going to be difficult. I suppose the COP is not that high even though most are enrolled via DSA is because these are the students who are probably not so strong in languages, hence pull down their COP.What about SST (School of Science & Technology) at Clementi? JRLam:
Nope, SST is not a strictly DSA school. I know kids who got in after PSLE results out. But they accept quite a number for DSA, so if keen, should try DSA first (just another opportunity). But I heard that the average COP (inclusive of DSA kids) is about 240.

Btw, thought of another school in this range of COP>240 is SJI. For girls in the West, there are MGS, SCGS & St Margaret. -
I will try to find out from my neighbour whose son is in SST.
SJI is too far ? No ? I still prefer to keep travelling time to minimium if possible as I think the school days will be long and many activites.
KSS is supposedly quite good but the culture seems very academic focus as they are like "pitting" themselves against BPGHS. I think last year COP is around low 230-240 but got to check.
Anyone trying for DSA ? I read the DSA thread and I donβt feel very optimistic.
