Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

JRLam:
yes. SCSS = SwissHi. Is SCSS = Swiss Cottage Sec Sch?
I heard that Commonwealth Sec Sch is a good 2nd-tier sch, COP abt 235+. My neighbour, who is a lawyer, was actually quite disappointed when her son didn't get into the likes of HCI, but now is very pleased with him in Commonwealth Sec. She said the principle and teachers there are sincere and she can feel the good vibes
my husband's views are bias cos he is old boy.

cwc:
 my new mp also only know famous schools. tell him where my ds1 school is, he :skeptical: . amy khor still the best cos is her turf (oops OT!).Hi Jedamum,
Agree, our choices would probably be similar. I will try to let my kids study around west area, not so tiring. But first, think I need to familiarize with the abbr. of the different sch  , only recognise some like RVH, RGS, RI, SJI, NYGS etc hee hee.
Hmmm.....maybe you can share share your list? I am quite blur on all these right now, set my mind on RVH....but realised not easy so need backup plan.
anyway, my shortlisted schools are really around my neighbourhood only. for anything <220, really looking at convenience and student behaviour. -
sorry to gatecrash and flood the thread with my outdated postings. now should go back to hibernate in this cozy stormy weather :celebrate:

Peony,
You’re welcomed! I’ve been thru’ it before: when P5 CA1 results were out, we got a shock and quite a few frens started calling and sharing. Thereafter, we realised that we have to be realistic and compared with cohort instead of purely seeing raw score of kids and panicking.
Having said that, you will also see over time (towards year end and next year) that mean of subjects will improve as the kids got more used to the test format and learn along the way.
cwc & Mum1113,
You guys are sure on the right track.
Let us parents work together with the kids and provide them support along the PSLE journey. Hopefully that makes the journey less stressful and more "enjoyable"! -
I’ve passed on your message to my friends/fellow mums in her school.
Be happy for them. School is stressfull enough. -
yah, exams are over
rest and play for the next few days, then back to the grind.
There's SA2 work to prepare....it's not good to be a kid in these times...... -
Peony:
cimman, er.. actually she had a good start from young. (100% in P1, 90 plus in P2 and high 80s for P 3 &4)
I can empathize with you. Language is really tough. Subjects like Maths and Science can get good grades with a few months of intensive effort. For languages, it has to start from young with the right environment.cimman:
DD just called to share her English marks... can't help feeling disappointed even though it's a marked improvement from her mock exams. Mock exams- 66%. SA1 - 75.6%.
Am still sore with the lack of teaching of compo as that really pulled her marks down.
I am still thankful but cannot help feeling sad as I recall the beautiful past marks from P1 to 4... different reality now...
But this is the school's strategy to scare parents and P5 so that more can get A* at PSLE. I know coz I asked the teacher when my DD found her test papers more difficult than the PSLE practise papers.
well, in that case, good for you.
You must have done the right things when she was younger and now reaping the benefits.
Sometimes I think the schools have this oneupmanship behaviour. They want to raise the bar above PSLE.
In the West, when they want children to improve, they encourage them. Over here, we put them in a negative light to spur them on....\"see, your grades are so bad, you really must buck up\", looks like the schools have this attitude. Something must be really wrong in our way of thinking. -
cimman:
Yes... it is counterproductive. Negative energy is not motivating. I have to work very hard to temper the effects of negative energy from the school.Sometimes I think the schools have this oneupmanship behaviour. They want to raise the bar above PSLE.

Ok...NO more looking back, esp at P4 results. Fast forward to the present, work on how to improve and get into the momentum of P5.Having said that, you will also see over time (towards year end and next year) that mean of subjects will improve as the kids got more used to the test format and learn along the way.

For now, must get my son to read the Straits Times everyday.
BTW, 20% voucher at Popular is available. Mummies, do remember to get your copy of the magazine. -
It is really a good feeling to R&R after the exams ! :dancing:
Lynn2 and cwc, we wait for you to join in the party ! Nearly there...加油 !
About 2nd&3rd tier Secondary schools :
I cannot add new post in \"Secondary Parents' Networking\" section so I added in the Secondary school selection section. Hopefully we can get some feedback. If any of you have any feedback from friends, neighbours, personal observations, do update the thread too.
