I just did the method Mrsbongz taught me regarding drawing the 4 HYPY tonal representation (- / V \\) on a piece of paper. Turns out that ds thought that for 第三声(V), the pitch must come down then go up again as represented by the 'V'. I don't know where he got this weird idea from?:

dun thank me, this weird idea is likely fr my ds 😛 that's how he differentiates e 2 tones. The 3rd tone does have a slight upward tilt n the drawings reminds ds. It workss so far. By reading downwards only, will e confusion b between the 3rd n 4th tones? :?

Really??? must ask my elder boy then. My P4 boy now sleeping, cant ask him the recent CA1 or SA1 has HYPY qns.

Mark, my sincere apologies if I hv misleaded you.

It's an honest mistake. Let's move on .....

Btw, I just did the method Mrsbongz taught me regarding drawing the 4 HYPY tonal representation (- / V \\) on a piece of paper. Turns out that ds thought that for 第三声(V), the pitch must come down then go up again as represented by the 'V'. I don't know where he got this weird idea from?

That's why he always confused this with 第二声. I don't know, maybe he's right. But his way usually cost him 50% of the allocated marks for HYPY. So I told him to follow my way which is to read 第三声 in a straight downward pitch and nothing more.

The next time his student care gives him past year papers to do, I will know whether he gets it right this time round. Mrsbongz, no matter what, a very big thank you to you. :salute:

i think your son is correct. my ds2 also pronounces it this way. when i listened to his tuition teacher from China carefully, i realised there is a slight upward tone at the end of her third sound, especially if it is the last Chinese character of a sentence. so i believe he learnt it from her, and i just let it be. but it is true that it can lead to confusion from time to time for those whose 1st language is not Chinese.

I could not help my elder boy at all with some P5 topics. Not easy w/o preparation. Even with my P4 boy, I must revise on my own prior to teaching him (since it has bn some years liao). Definitely not looking forward to teaching him P5 MA.

Confirmed - there are at least 2 HYPY qns in P5 CL papers. Like what Funx3 said, these are qns to score, so must master HYPY. Once they get it, it is a breeze.

Wow, the last 3-4 problem sums in P5 SA1 Paper 2 are really complex. Like Janet, I gave up trying to solve them (my ds got chicken-egg from them!), don't want to kill more brain cells. Any parent keen to take a crack? I intend to copy them down for further reference. So if you are keen, I can type them out onto the forum ...

Yes, if you can publish it, i would appreciate it. i am curious how tough p5 is going to be. i will also show it to my son so that he can get a feel. 😉

Whoa, your dd black belt in taewondo, top few in national RG, sch rep in calligraphy, sch prefect, now top 3 in class ...... when does the list end?

I think your dd makes really good DIL material. Too bad my ds too young for her.

Actually they were taught correctly by their chinese T. It's just that this confuses ds with regards to the 第二声 & 第三声. So I put forth my simplified method.

Oh dear, I certainly hope that using my flawed method, now ds doesn't get confused with 第三声 & 第四声. :faint:

Thanks dyh. I've already been corrected by a chinese expert this morning via pm. Frankly, between having a less than perfect pronunciation vs getting 50% wrong for HYPY, I'll choose the former any time.

In the meantime, I'm hopeful that ds will eventually learn the correct way in future (I mean if a hopeless guy like me can understand it, he should be able to considering his much stronger foundation in chinese). 🙏
