The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) sent a team down on Monday to visit the affected block at Woodlands whose residents had the misfortune of drinking ‘corpse water’ due to the sheer incompetence of the PAP-run Town Council.

The team includes a medical doctor Dr Leong Yan Hoi and a lawyer M Ravi. Dr Leong advised affected residents to seek medical help if they suffered from any physical or emotional symptoms while Mr Ravi pointed out that there is an issue of negligence that could be brought to the courts if any resident or group of residents wanted to pursue the matter.

According to the SDP website, several residents were upset that they were only informed of the contamination only after several hours the maid’s body was discovered in the tank.

To add salt to their wounds, they were only offered a $10 rebate off their next utility bill by PUB to ‘compensate’ for the emotional trauma they have gone through.

During a dialogue session last week with the management of the Town Council, some 80 residents signed a petition requesting its General Manager and other senior staff to step down to take responsiblity for the the lapse.

Though the mainstream media sent journalists to follow the SDP team on its visit, the news was not reported in the media even as the PAP MPs continue to be ‘missing in action’.

Residents said that other than newbie PAP MP Vikram Nair who visited a few households to ‘test’ their drinking water last week, the other PAP MPs of Sembawang GRC helmed by Housing Minister Khaw Boon Wan, were nowhere to be seen, heard or found.
Hougang SMC is quick to take action to ensure residents of safety precautions:

LAST week saw an uproar among residents of Block 686B Woodlands Drive 73 about security following the discovery of a dead maid's body in one of the water tanks on the rooftop.

On Wednesday, Hougang SMC (Single Member Constituency) posted the following note at 2.09pm on its Facebook page (carried exactly as posted below):

'In view of the recent unfortunate 'body in water tank' incident, there were concerns raised about water tanks' security & safety issues across the island. To help residents better understand the processes Hougang Town Council (HGTC) put in place, below are HGTC's water tanks' safety guidelines enforced throughout the years.

'All water tanks in the HDB blocks of Hougang SMC (Single Member Constituency) Estate are locked. Cleaners do not have access but if they are required to access the roof to do any cleaning works, a HGTC officer is required to be present to monitor and check the works.

'The access door to the roof is also locked and the keys to access the locks are securitised in that these cannot be duplicated at any shop except by the manufacturer who can only do so with the authorisation by HGTC. The locks to the access door to the roof are different from that used to lock the water tanks. Any personnel given access to the roof must first be authorised by the company that has a contract with HGTC or statutory boards.

'Existing at the roof tops of HDB blocks are various services which various authorities either directly or through their assigns may want access to at one time or another. To accommodate this, HGTC endeavors to maintain the current system of using only securitised padlocks accompanied by very stringent enforcement actions...'
Think they believe too much in their 'segregation of duties', that since MK V Nair is the MP in charge of that area (do they call it 'ward'), the other MPs of the same GRC do not need to appear.

Actually I'm waiting for my MP to issue similar statements. Umm, Mr MP, whilst you waiting for the bus, care to pen down a few statements to let your constituents know? :skeptical:

Former PAP MP Ang Mong Seng is CEO of EM services which run Sembawang Town Council

The residents of Block 686 who drank the ‘corpse water’ are unlikely to succeed in their demands for the management of Sembawang Town Council to step down.

The CEO of EM Services which is contracted to run Sembawang Town Council happens to be a former PAP MP for Hong Kah GRC Mr Ang Mong Seng:

                        http://singaporege2011.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/angmoseng.jpg

Is it a mere coincidence that a number of CEOs and general managers of Town Councils are PAP leaders like the General Manager of Jurong Town Council Ho Thian Poh who is also the PAP branch secretary of Bukit Batok East?

Despite the emotion trauma and anguish suffered by the affected residents who continued drinking the contaminated water hours after the maid’s body was discovered, they were only offered a $10 ‘compensation’ off their next utility bill.

Though Sembawang Town Council has admitted its lapse in not informing the residents earlier, it has blatantly refused to apologize, let alone sacked the staff responsible for it.

While the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has sent a team down on Monday to comfort the distressed residents, the PAP MPs are nowhere to be found, heard or seen.

The state media should devote some time doing some serious investigative journalism about the intricate web of relationships between the PAP MPs and grassroots leaders, its Town Councils and the estate management companies contracted to run the services in its constituencies.
