Hi kwokwc, just to let u know that ds has decided not to go for the finals,thks to his teacher's advice. (which is exactly my thought too but I didn't want to say so to ds as I wanted him to decide for himself without thinking that it's because \"mommy said so\".) There will always be competitions in the future but for now, the priority for ds would be to spend time with the family.
Are u still looking at changing the flight? Which airline did u book your tickets from? If it is SQ, perhaps it's easier and faster if you go to the ticketing office at ION. -

But he is very keen in going. And my son can be very stubborn at times, so don't know how. *sigh* At least for you, your son make up his mind to what all of you think, not like mine.
He was even telling me forfeit his ticket and he stay in singapore with my parents for that few days. But not sure if this can be done at the airlines side and also, how can I enjoy with him alone in Singapore. This has been a much awaited trip for all of us to relax and enjoy time together.

kwokwc, ours are not the only ones having the same problem. Ds have friends who will be coming back early from their vacation for the finals.
To the selected child, it does seems like an opportunity not to be missed esp. when they knew they are on of the 48. Of course they would want to join the final with their friends. So it’s really not an easy decision. I feel that I have to explain the situation to ds so that he can make a decision for himself.
To ds, I told him first abt the cost of changes to the flight. Next, I told him if he is willing to sacrifice his time with his daddy by coming back early. Also,his decision will affect the rest of the family since both elder dd and I would hv to come back together. I also wonder if I would allow him to go Philippines if selected (ds asked me this question too and I said it depends largely on which teacher-in-charge is going. Maybe this is not really a concern because parents can also tag along.) Ultimately, it is his teacher’s advice that helped him seals it. -

If I m not wrong, this yr the maths selection for IMSO will be done by NUS High via NMOS. Hence no sign of Raffles Maths Olympiad this yr.
Yes. Last year it was organize by RI and rgs. So the top 15 finalists after the second round will go through training lessons conducted in RI and rgs. This yr I am not sure which school is organizing it. At the end of the training, the top 15 of each section will need to take a test again. From the test, the top 6 plus 2 reserves of each sections will be further trained for imso. But the reserves will not get to go oversea unless any of the 6 main contestants cannot go at the last min. -

Thanks sandunes, after seeing what you wrote, I think I really should have a better talk with ds. Well, if ds is really selected and can Philippines, I would let him go as he has shown me that he can take care of himself, as he went for an oversea learning journey early this year and his teacher told me that he can take care of himself. Just wondering, has there been cases of the same kid selected for both the Science Olympiad and Maths Olympiad? Then can this 1 kid go for both on representing S’pore? How come Maths Olympiad is more famous than Science? And also Maths Olympiad has more emphasis than Science?

The kid would have to choose either one as during imso, both Sci and maths with conduct at the same time. Last yr there are one such case.
Last yr imso clashed with p5 gep final yr exam, so affected students got to postpone school exam abt a week later. Quite hectic for them as they need to revise exam plus go for imso. -

I have removed the imso philippines link in my previous post as when I clicked on it again, there was a warning for virus message. So do a search yourself if u need the info. I believe this year's date is in Sep. -
NUS High School is officially appointed by the Gifted Education Branch to be the Lead Agency for the 8th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Schools (IMSO). For 2011, IMSO will be held on 2nd Sep to 6th Sep in the Philippines.
The top 20 individual winners of NMOS will be shortlisted to join the training squad for IMSO 2011. Within the training squad, a final team of 6 official participants and 2 reserves will be selected to form the Mathematics team for IMSO 2011. Only the 6 official participants are eligible to travel to the Philippines.

The Singapore Primary Science Olympiad (SPSO) is an annual national competition organized by the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science. This competition, which is open to Primary 5 students in all primary schools in Singapore, will take place over two days and involves two rounds: the Theory and Practical Rounds. From these rounds of competition, top 20 students will be shortlisted for a training programme conducted by NUS High School in preparation for the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO). The final squad, which consists of six official participants and two reserves, will be selected to form the Science team to represent Singapore in IMSO 2011. Only the six official participants will be eligible to travel to the Philippines.
