my sofa has been with me for 6 yrs, also in good condition esp for a slit at the side which i had "sealed" bk with tape.

my maid will clean it with wet cloth once in a while

but my SIL sofa never last more than a yr, i also do not know why
its was torn and skin peel
initially i thought her kids have been jumping on it alot but she said no
            perhaps different type of leather?

I think most leather sofa are actually made of synthetic leather and there are different grade of synthetic leather. My 1st leather sofa also started peeling off after 1 yr+. Bought my 2nd leather sofa and we looked for the type of leather that dun peel easily. The sale did mentioned that there is a type of leather that will peel. This 2nd leather sofa has already lasted for almost 2yrs & so far so good. :xedfingers:

                hi smartmummy,
where to buy the scotch tape for amend leather?
my 2 kids also jump on my leather sofa like monkeys till the stitching between the 2 pieces started to peel! I wana minimize the damage soonest possible but my sofa is white in color... the scotch tape is transparent type?
                appreciate your reply!

There are also many types of \"real\" leather. Besides cow hide, the leather in many of our local leather sofas are made of elephant skin, water buffalo skin and so on. Quality leather sofa are made from genuine cow hide where the cattle has been specially bred for the skin, not the meat or milk. There are these special farms in places like the Netherlands.

Having said that, problems also occur when you clean the leather sofa with soap and water too often. The soap and water will wash away the protective layer covering the leather and make it dry. When dry, it becomes easy to peel. Leather is a natural product and needs care. To clean it you should use the leather cleaner and protector (oil based). Use the cleaner first followed by the protector. With proper care, the leather sofa will last longer.

Ya, I use the same kind of leather cream for my car seat on the leather sofa as well. Even my Gucci bag also peel so sofa is no exception. Need to maintain. Leather sofa not suitable for laid back people.

My green colour leather sofa is more than 10 years old. Other than the occasional cleaning (maybe once a year), I am quite laid back. Can't remember when was the last time I cleaned using a leather cleaner and protector. Even then, it is still in very good condition, no cracks or tears. Maybe a bit black and dirty on the part where I tend to rest my head. Maybe its made from good cow hide.

Like I said, most of the time the problem is due to too much cleaning with soap and water. Even if you put the leather cleaner/protector, too much cleaning will remove them resulting in cracks and tears.
